Stephen Thompson has one of the most unique fighting styles in the UFC. With a lifetime of experience in kempo karate and an incredible run as a full-contact kickboxer behind him, he’s the owner of a striking arsenal that has given all but one of his previous opponents absolute fits. Not even former champion Johny Hendricks or former title challenger Rory MacDonald could solve the puzzle that is standup battle with Thompson.
In an effort to celebrate Thompson’s distinctive and destructive style, Instagram user @waynegichie has edited together a clip that syncs some of Thompson’s finest attacks up with those of martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Thompson later shared this video on his personal Instagram page. You can watch the video at the top of this post.
Thompson’s next challenge will occur in less than two weeks’ time, when he will challenge Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title in the co-main event of UFC 205. Despite his status as the title challenger, the odds favor the striking specialist to leave this New York City card with the title wrapped around his waist.
Thompson will enter this hotly anticipated bout with a decision win over former title challenger Rory MacDonald in his wake. Prior to that win, he scored career-changing knockout wins over top talents in Johny Hendricks and Jake Ellenberger. The streaking title challenger has not lost a fight since he was out-wrestled by Matt brown in April of 2012 – the lone loss of his mixed martial arts career.
Do you think Stephen Thompson will win the UFC welterweight title at UFC 205? Or is he in for a tough night against the champ, Tyron Woodley? Sound off, PENN Nation!
