This past weekend, MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko was slated to make his highly anticipated Bellator MMA debut against UFC veteran Matt Mitrione in a highly anticipated showdown that would have seen both Emelianenko and Mitrione put their 2-fight win streaks on the line in a highly anticipated marquee fight. Unfortunately, Mitrione was pulled from the fight just hours before fight night due to a medical illness that landed him in the hospital. Later, it was revealed that the reason for Mitrione’s hospitalization was kidney stones, which he would need to have surgically removed.

On Friday night, the MMA community was transfixed on the imminent comeback of heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko. The Russian great was poised to take on Matt Mitrione in the main event of Saturday’s Bellator 172, and not even the UFC’s Sunday trip to Halifax could distract us from his return to action. Regrettably, things took an unfortunate twist on Saturday afternoon, when it was announced that Mitrione had been forced out of his planned bout with the legend, as he was suffering from kidney stones. With this development, a lightweight bout between Patricky Freire and Josh Thomson was elevated to the main event, and the card proceeded with much less pop than we anticipated.

Breaking news surfaced Saturday afternoon that Bellator MMA heavyweight Matt Mitrione has been forced out of his Bellator 172 headlining fight against MMA icon Fedor Emelianenko. According to reports from Ariel Helwani, Matt Mitrione fell ill prior to his fight against ‘The Last Emperor’ and as a result the fight has been cancelled.

Former UFC heavyweight fighter Matt Mitrione is happy with his decision to join Bellator MMA. After failed negotiations with the UFC, Mitrione opted for the promotion’s biggest competitor that offered a more lucrative opportunity. “Some people are so brainwashed,” Mitrione told Bleacher Report. “They say, ‘How dare you think about business like that?’ If you cite money, you’re a greedy pig. If you cite anything else, you’re a scared p—y. It’s crazy. The thing is, the UFC has become bigger than the sport, and what’s bad about that is so many people want to be in the UFC that everyone else is an afterthought. There are guys in smaller organizations that their only goal is ‘I want to go to the UFC.’ And I’ll tell them there might be more money in another place. And they’ll say, ‘It doesn’t really matter. That’s my goal.’ But once people get to the UFC, they might get the disenchantment of what’s going on. If you’re a veteran in the UFC, you’ll see it.”

Former UFC veteran heavyweight Matt Mitrione announced earlier this week that he left the UFC to sign with Bellator MMA. The former NFL football player and season 10 member of “The Ultimate Fighter” recently spoke with the Three Amigos on his big career decision (transcribed by Bloody Elbow): “I was brought here for my fighting style and my ratings/my draw. I want to fight against somebody that really wants to fight; not necessarily go toe-to-toe. I don’t care if we grapple, I don’t care — whatever it is — but I want there to be an action-filled fight, and whoever they deem appropriate — ‘Look, this guy’s a stand-and-banger, he’s a hell of a grappler, and he’s got hands on him,’ [then] awesome.”

Bellator MMA has acquired another big name from the UFC following the signing of former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and MMA legend Wanderlei Silva. Former NFL player and UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione announced his decision to sign with Bellator MMA on the MMA Hour on Monday.

Back in January at ‘UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw vs. Cruz’ Matt Mitrione suffered one of the most gruesome eye injuries in the history of MMA at the hands of Travis Browne. Mitrione was poked in the same eye twice by Browne, which subsequently lead to him being unable to see out of that eye. Due to this, Mitrione couldn’t see a punch coming and had his orbital broken.

Back at ‘UFC Fight Night: Boston’ earlier this year, Matt Mitrione suffered one of the most gruesome eye injuries in the history of combat sports. According to Mitrione, the eye pokes left him unable to see out of the eye, which ultimately resulted in his orbital being cracked from a cross thrown by Browne.
