Jimi Manuwa is Fighting Jan Blachowicz Because He Had No Choice

Justin Golightly - March 17, 2018

Jimi Manuwa is really familiar with his opponent tonight at UFC London. He fought Jan Blachowicz back in 2015 to earn a decision win. Since then he’s only lost to Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson and the latest light heavyweight title challenger Volkan Oezdemir. He’d prefer to be fighting a higher ranked opponent, but it seems like none of them are accepting fights with him. “I wanted to fight a top five guy. I wanted the No. 3 guy Glover Teixeira. I said let me fight Glover, they said Glover doesn’t want to fight. I said let me fight Mauricio ‘Shogun’ [Rua], they said Shogun doesn’t want to fight. I said who else is available in the top 10? They said no one was available to fight in the whole top 10. I said who’s available to fight in the whole light heavyweight division? Only Jan Blachowicz said yes so I said give me Jan Blachowicz. That’s the reason we’re fighting.”

Jimi Manuwa shares his gripes with the UFC media schedule ahead of UFC London

Tom Taylor - March 15, 2018

The UFC’s return to London, which is headlined by a heavyweight tilt between Fabricio Werdum and Alexander Volkov, and co-headlined by a light heavyweight rematch between Jimi Manuwa and Jan Blachowicz, is now just days away. With the card just around the corner, the many fighters on the bill are all getting their weight cuts underway, hitting the sauna and depriving themselves of any real quantities of food or water. Unfortunately, they’re also required to engage in a bevy of media obligations as they attempt the shed the remaining pounds required for their fights.

Tom Taylor - January 10, 2018

British light heavyweight Jimi Manuwa was hoping he’d be paired with Brazilian contender Glover Teixeira for the UFC’s March 18 return to London, England. Unfortunately for him, this option didn’t seem to interest Teixeira, which left him with no choice but to accept a London rematch with Jan Blachowicz, who defeated by decision several years ago. Speaking to Peter Carroll of MMAFighting.com, Manuwa shared his thoughts on Teixeira. Needless to say, he’s not particularly pleased that the Brazilian talent didn’t accept his offer.

Jimi Manuwa Teases Fight News

Drake Riggs - December 29, 2017

The United Kingdom’s best Light Heavyweight has been looking for a fight ever since his last one ended. Understandably so, Jim Manuwa’s bout with Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 214 did not quite go as planned. The Brit was looking at a potential title shot with a big win over the man from Switzerland. Instead, it was Oezdemir stealing the shot with his early KO over the surging Manuwa. But now it sounds like he’s finally got an opponent. UFC London on March 17 is looming…could this be where Manuwa’s next fight will take place? Perhaps in the main event? Manuwa took to Twitter to tease some news. Fight news coming soon…I’ve been lucky enough to be able to not have camp through Christmas and spend with the family , now it’s back to the money. Camp is on!!

Jimi Manuwa explains why he's hesitant to call out "Shogun"

Tom Taylor - December 18, 2017

England’s Jimi Manuwa is one of the top light heavyweight contenders in the UFC. That said, his recent knockout loss to Volkan Oezdemir probably means he’s another impressive win away from a title shot. When weighing the options for Manuwa’s next fight, there are a few that really stand out. One is Glover Teixeira, who won big over Misha Cirkunov last weekend (though he doesn’t seem that interested in this potential fight). Another is MMA legend Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, who has recently been enjoying a significant, late-career resurgence.

Jimi Manuwa calls for showdown with Glover Teixeira, Teixeira responds

Tom Taylor - December 18, 2017

On Saturday night, on the main card of the stacked UFC on Fox 26, Brazil’s Glover Teixeira reasserted himself as one of the light heavyweight division’s top contenders by smashing the highly-regarded Misha Cirkunov to a first-round TKO. With this win, Teixeira might well have earned himself a shot at the winner of UFC 220’s Daniel Cormier vs. Volkan Oezdemir light heavyweight title fight. That said, he’s still only one win removed from a crushing, knockout loss to Alexander Gustafsson, and so he might still need another win to solidify his title shot.

EXCLUSIVE | Jimi Manuwa discusses Volkan Oezdemir's chances against Daniel Cormier

Tom Taylor - December 14, 2017

Back in July, on the main card of the stacked UFC 214, English knockout artist Jimi Manuwa stepped into the Octagon with Swiss striker Volkan Oezdemir in a perceived light heavyweight number one contender fight. Unfortunately for Manuwa and his fans, this one went to Oezdemir, who won with punches in the first round. From there, Manuwa set his sights on the opportunity to rebound, while Oezdemir was pencilled in for a UFC 220 title fight with light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

EXCLUSIVE | Jimi Manuwa discusses Jon Jones situation, suggests serious punishment if he's found guilty

Tom Taylor - December 14, 2017

Shortly after Jon Jones knocked out Daniel Cormier to re-capture the UFC light heavyweight title, it was announced that he’d tested positive for turinabol in a pre-fight drug test. With this disappointing turn of events, Jones’ knockout win was overturned, and the light heavyweight strap was returned to Cormier. At present, Jones is undergoing his due process, as the facts are weighed and the evidence is considered. Whatever happens, however, many fans, pundits and fellow fighters are now unsure what to make of Jones and his incredible, greatest-of-all-time level success. File fourth-ranked UFC light heavyweight contender Jimi Manuwa into that group.

Jimi Manuwa Drops the Name He Wants to Fight Next

Justin Golightly - November 9, 2017

Before all hell broke loose, Jimi Manuwa was seemingly the next guy in line for a UFC light heavyweight title shot. Of course, then we were hit with a Jon Jones controversy and Manuwa was hit by Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 214. That was at the end of July, now the hard-hitting Brit is ready to come back to the Octagon and get back on track for a title shot. In order to do this, he wants to take on scrappy veteran Glover Teixeira on his path to gold. I want glover in my next fight, after that I’m coming for Cormier or oezdemir, who ever wins. 1 fight then the title is what’s happening #lionseatfirst pic.twitter.com/W7fmfvLekK

Jimi Manuwa and David Haye Agree to Fight at the Beginning of Next Year

Justin Golightly - September 16, 2017

For all of you who thought Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather was just a one-off thing, you may be wrong. As with many other things, McGregor seemingly has opened up the floodgates when it comes to MMA fighters crossing over to MMA. Jimi Manuwa has been talking about a possible match-up with heavyweight boxer and multiple-time champ David Haye for awhile, but it looks like it is finally happening. Just last night at a BAMMA fight card, the two fighters got together for a talk and photo-op to announce they could fight as early as next year. “The fight is on. He wants it and I want it and all that. He says he has to fight a couple more fights before we’re going to fight. We’re going to do it beginning of next year.” — Jimi Manuwa speaking to MMA Uno.

Jimi Manuwa issues statement after quick KO loss to Volkan Oezdemir

Tom Taylor - July 30, 2017

On Saturday night, in the first bout of the stacked UFC 214 main card, British knockout artist Jimi Manuwa stepped onto the canvas with rapidly rising Swiss contender Volkan Oezdemir. The winner of this fight, it seemed, would become the next man in line for the winner of Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones light heavyweight championship main event. While Manuwa entered this fight as a notable betting favorite, things really couldn’t have gone much worse for him. After tying Oezdemir up against the cage, he ate a handful of clubbing uppercuts, and was sent stumbling across the cage by a left hand. A few followup punches later, and he was out like a light. It was a breakthrough win for Oezdemir, and a disaster for Manuwa.

Tom Taylor - July 26, 2017

This weekend, on the main card of UFC 214, England’s Jimi Manuwa will battle Volkan Oezdemir in what could well be a light heavyweight number one contender fight. From the sounds of it, however, a title shot isn’t the only big opportunity on Manuwa’s horizon. Speaking to BT Sport, Manuwa recently reiterated that his desired boxing match with David Haye is still indeed in the works, and that it could happen sometime in early 2017.
