Earlier this year, ‘The Phenom’ expressed his support for a ‘legend division’ in the UFC, an idea he felt should be presented to the new WME-IMG UFC owners looking to draw more eyes to the UFC. Report | Vitor Belfort retirement fight set for UFC 212
bjpenndotcom - April 28, 2017
Former UFC champion Vitor Belfort has been on quite the skid as of late. The MMA legend went into 2016 hoping to build momentum on a 1st round KO win over Dan Henderson, however back to back TKO losses to Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza and Gegard Mousasi resulted in Belfort going winless in 2016. Following his loss to Mousasi, reports began to emerge that Belfort would be retiring from MMA. ‘The Phenom’ posted a lengthy status to Instagram, however he then revealed in a separate interview that he would not be retiring from MMA just yet. To kick off 2017, Belfort stepped into the Octagon with Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: Fortaleza’, where he dropped a 1st round TKO to the streaking contender. Following his fight with Gastelum, Belfort confirmed that his next fight would indeed be his last.

Earlier this month, aging MMA legend Vitor Belfort was knocked senseless by a younger, faster, stronger fighter in Kelvin Gastelum. In the wake of this decisive loss, the declining legend explained that he would like to fulfill the last fight on his contract before retiring – ideally at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this June. Shortly thereafter, Belfort generated headlines by suggesting he’d like his retirement fight to be against former WWE star CM Punk – a welterweight with almost no martial arts experience, and a 0-1 professional MMA record. Unsurprisingly, this callout generated some negative responses from the MMA community – including one from notoriously outspoken middleweight champ Michael Bisping.
