Islam Makhachev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has put the blame on Ilia Topuria for not agreeing to a super fight.

Topuria’s manager Malki Kawa recently claimed that his fighter wasn’t satisfied with the money he was offered to fight Makhachev at UFC Freedom 250. UFC CEO Dana White responded by claiming Makhachev is dealing with a hand issue.

Abdelaziz shared his side of the story in an interview with TMZ, claiming that the bout was offered, but Topuria was the one who took issue with the terms.

“I got called about Ilia fighting Islam. It was the middle of the day, Islam was sleeping, and I was excited about it,” Abdelaziz said. After that, I got called back, ‘Never mind, the fight’s not gonna happen.’ Even before I talked to Islam.”

The top MMA manager then questioned whether or not “El Matador” truly wants the Makhachev fight.

“I believe Ilia and Islam is the biggest fight the UFC can make. I think this fight should happen this year. But in a way, does Ilia really want it?” Abdelaziz said.

Abdelaziz isn’t scoffing at Topuria’s decision, however. He understands why Topuria doesn’t want to vacate the UFC Lightweight Championship as he had to relinquish the featherweight gold not too long ago.

Makhachev is the reigning UFC Welterweight Champion. Topuria is set for a title unification bout against interim champion Justin Gaethje on the aforementioned UFC Freedom 250 card.

As for Makahchev, Abdelaziz has claimed that his fighter is ready to roll against the No. 1 contender this summer. Abdelaziz did not clarify if he was referring to Ian Machado Garry or someone who Makhachev’s team believes is the rightful challenger.
