Daniel Cormier rips fans who mocked Dustin Poirier following viral arrest: “It sucks to watch them do that”

Poirier went viral for the wrong reason over Father’s Day weekend. Footage surfaced of Poirier trying to start a fight with an Atlanta police officer after being kicked off a flight. “The Diamond” was arrested for public intoxication. The retired UFC star took to his Instagram page to admit that he needs some help following the incident.

“I think that we should have some empathy,” Cormier said. “I think that people should be a little bit more careful to judge Dustin Poirier, and we need to understand because when you can help the next man, that shows strength. It’s easy to be part of a mob, it’s easy to pile onto someone. But I watch the reaction and it sucks. It sucks to watch them do that. It sucks to see the reaction. … Everybody loves Dustin. Dustin has done some great things, especially in our hometown and community. We can’t forget the great work because of a mistake that he made that’s very, very public. He’s not the only one. So many people struggle whenever that thing is gone.”
Poirier has received encouraging messages from the likes of MMA legend Jon Jones and lightweight veteran Drew Dober. While most within the MMA community have expressed empathy for Poirier, there are a select few who have gone the opposite direction. Colby Covington put Poirier on blast following the incident, calling “The Diamond” into question for behind taken into custody on Father’s Day weekend.
