Shortly after his competitive UFC 209 loss to reigning welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, we learned that Stephen Thompson had sustained an injury to his MCL. In an interview with BJPENN.COM’s Chris Taylor, Thompson clarified that, while his MCL was indeed injured, it would not require surgery. He would, however, require surgery for an injured meniscus. “It was the MCL, but the doctors said that injury would heal on its own,” Thompson told Taylor. “I have surgery tomorrow on my right knee. Woodley earned a majority decision after five close rounds of combat that some felt could have gone in favor of Thompson. Both men earned a significant payday but were not the earners of the highest guaranteed salaries for their fight. Woodley earned a $400,000 guaranteed fight purse with a $100,000 win bonus. Thompson earned $380,000 for his title fight competition. This does not include any pay-per-view compensation that is typical of a UFC championship fight.

In the wake of this extremely close battle, Demian Maia, who is arguably the top contender in the UFC welterweight division, made an appearance on The MMA Hour and offered his scorecard for the fight. Contrary to the official decision, the Brazilian grappling specialist says he scored the fight for Wonderboy, and speculated that the judges were swayed by Woodley’s surge late in the fifth round.
