It’s now been over a year since former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey was knocked out by Holly Holm, and we haven’t seen her in action since. In a few short weeks, however, that will change. Rousey is expected to make her long awaited comeback in the main event of UFC 207 on December 30, when she takes on reigning champion Amanda Nunes. In advance of this fight, there has been widespread speculation surrounding Rousey’s headspace and physical condition. A year on the shelf, after all, can have major effects on a fighter both mentally and physically. Many fans and pundits have wondered whether she’s motivated, and whether she’ll be in adequate shape come fight night.

It’s no secret that former UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Miesha Tate and former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey have a very long and bitter rivalry dating back to the Strikeforce days of both women’s careers. Earlier this month, Tate retired at the UFC’s historic UFC 205 card in New York, where she dropped a unanimous decision to Raquel Pennington, whom she coached on The Ultimate Fighter several years ago. Next month, Rousey will make her highly anticipated return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC 207 as she returns from her yearlong hiatus to fight UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes on the highly anticipated New Years Eve card.

Earlier today, we reported that Conor McGregor’s team said that they would be willing to entertain offers from WWE. If the Irishman were to accept an offer from the pro wrestling organization and step into the ring, he’d be following in the footsteps of another massive MMA star in Ronda Rousey. Rousey made her foray into the pro wrestling world at WrestleMania 31 in March of 2015, when she joined The Rock in the ring for a brief showdown with Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. During this skirmish, Rousey hip tossed Triple H out of the ring, and threatened McMahon with an armbar before chucking her out of the ring as well.

Next month fight fans will finally see former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey step into the Octagon in a highly anticipated return bout to the Octagon. Rousey of course will be returning from her year-long hiatus to square off against women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes for the UFC women’s bantamweight championship in what will be her first bout since suffering the first loss of her career back at UFC 193 at the hands of Holly Holm. When it was announced that Rousey would be returning to the Octagon, UFC President Dana White also announced that if Rousey were to win her return fight, she would then have a superfight with Cris Cyborg.

In the evening’s main event, transcendent MMA star and women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey sought to make another defense of her title against Holly Holm. By the time Nunes and Rousey take to the Octagon on December 30th, it will have been over a year since Rousey was last in the Octagon, when she dropped a horrific 2nd round KO loss to Holly Holm which saw her lose the women’s bantamweight championship. Since then, Rousey has become a fixture in Hollywood. While the initial plan for the WMMA superstar was to film three movies and then return to the Octagon, her return was consistently postponed as she continued to film movies in Hollywood, while taking care of several nagging injuries.

Ahead of the fight, the MMA community is rather torn on their predictions for the highly anticipated scrap. While some believe that after over a year away from the Octagon, Ronda Rousey will return and make a statement by defeating Nunes and capturing the women’s bantamweight champion, others believe that the fight will play out much similar to the Rousey vs. Holm fight, which saw Rousey lose the women’s bantamweight championship at UFC 193, and Nunes will knock Rousey out.

The fight will not only serve as Rousey’s highly anticipated return to the Octagon after nearly a year away from the sport, it will also headline what is being marketed as the UFC’s New Year’s Eve card. Rousey was on a tear for nearly 5 years as she compiled a 12-0 record that saw her finish all 12 opponents. That changed in November of 2015 in the main event of UFC 193 however when Rousey stepped into the Octagon with renowned striker Holly Holm. Just moments into the fight Holm began to land a cross, which continued to land on Rousey. Throughout the reamained of the first round, Holm picked apart the women’s bantamweight champion. In the second round, it took Holm just under a minute to finish the WMMA superstar with a brutal head kick.

Contrary to UFC President Dana White’s recent claims that Ronda Rousey is “by far” a bigger star than Conor McGregor, the widespread perception seems to be that the Irishman is indeed the king of mixed martial arts, if not all of combat sports. McGregor has, after all, repeatedly demolished records in the areas of pay-per-view sales and fighter pay. He has also been tasked with headlining UFC 205, the biggest card in the organization’s history, which is a clear indication of his value.

Earlier this month, when UFC President Dana White announced that Rousey would be returning to the Octagon in December, over a year after suffering the first loss of her professional career at the hands of Holly Holm at UFC 193, White announced that in addition to returning for a championship fight with Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, Rousey was looking for a superfight with Cris Cyborg if she defeated Nunes at UFC 207.
