Roy Nelson suspended nine months for UFC Fight Night 95 incident

UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson likely regrets letting his emotions get the best of him. “Big County” has been suspended for nine months by the Brazilian Superior Justice Court of MMA (STJDMMA) for assault and unethical behavior, according to a report from MMA Fighting. In addition to the suspension, Nelson was also fined $24,000 and the suspension is retroactive to September 29.

Tyron Woodley missed out on an opportunity that most fighters in the UFC will never get. The welterweight champion gave up his post-fight photoshoot with his championship belt after retaining the title against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in a majority draw judge’s decision at UFC 205. Woodley gave up the photo opportunity after letting the UFC use his belt to lend to Conor McGregor to have for his historic moment.

USADA Hands Lyoto Machida 18-Month Suspension for Anti-Doping Violation

Earlier this year, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida was pencilled in for a middleweight bout with the now-retired Dan Henderson. The fight, which was scheduled for April’s UFC on Fox 19 card, would have been a rematch of a slow 2013 bout, which saw Machida walk away with split decision win. Regrettably, Machida was pulled from this April rematch when he was flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for the steroid 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which increases metabolism and weight loss and curbs the effects of aging.

This past Saturday in New York, the UFC hosted its inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden. The event was an action packed one from the start, with things quickly picking up on the main card as Vicente Luque and Tim Boetsch both picked up back to back first round TKO/KO wins to kick off the televised prelims. In the preliminary co-main event, Khabib Nurmagomedov picked up yet another win, extending his professional record to 24-0, with his UFC record now at 8-0. In the preliminary main event, former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar returned the the win column following his UFC 200 interim featherweight title loss to Jose Aldo as he picked up an impressive unanimous decision win over Jeremy Stephens.

This past weekend, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor stepped into the Octagon to square off against UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in a highly anticipated matchup, headlining the UFC’s historic inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden. McGregor of course cemented his place in the UFC history books as he dominated Alvarez from bell to bell, dropping the gritty MMA veteran just moments into the fight, before ultimately finishing him in the 2nd round with a beautiful 4-punch combination. Following the fight, McGregor was compared to undefeated boxing icon Floyd Mayweather, which didn’t go over too well with ‘Money’, McGregor fired back, and threw fuel on the flames of a rumor of a fight between the two.

Though it’s known that McGregor plans to follow this momentous accomplishment with a hiatus from competition, it didn’t take long for fans to start debating who he should take on next. When it comes to McGregor’s next opponent, there seems to be five options. They are, in no particular order: interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo, top lightweight contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, and Stockton, California’s Nate Diaz.

Throughout the course of the week leading up to UFC 205, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley were involved in several backstage ‘altercations’. While no punches were exchanged, the pair were forced to be separated by security on several occasions. The first incident was a very minor one, and occurred during the UFC 205 press conference on Thursday, setting the stage for several more interactions throughout the remainder of fight week. During the course of the press conference, after McGregor took then-lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez’ title belt, he stated that he was coming for all the belts on the stage, which included Woodley’s welterweight championship.

One of the highlights of UFC 205 was welterweight champion Tyron Woodley’s incredible, five-round war with challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The pair’s tooth-and-nail battle was so competitive that it culminated in a rare, majority draw. With this uncommon result, Woodley retains his title – though surely not in the fashion he intended. With the belt still wrapped around his waist, the champ now shifts his focus to his next challenge. And though UFC President Dana White suggested that challenge would be an immediate rematch with Thompson, Woodley recently explained that he wouldn’t mind taking on streaking contender Demian Maia at UFC 207 this December 30. The champ voiced this desire on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.
