Coach Kavanagh reacts to Conor McGregor being stripped of his UFC featherweight title

During last night’s UFC Fight Night 101 broadcast, UFC officials announced that Conor McGregor had ‘relinquished’ his UFC featherweight championship. The promotion added that Jose Aldo, who won UFC interim featherweight title be defeating Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 in July, had been promoted to undisputed featherweight champion of the UFC.

https://youtu.be/BPAsxxC6p9s Earlier this month, in the main event of the massively hyped UFC 205, Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. Given that McGregor already owned the UFC featherweight belt, he could then call himself the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes concurrently.

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (12-1 MMA) will return to action next month in Las Vegas when she challenges current UFC 135-pound women’s champion Amanda Nunes for the title in the main event of UFC 207. Rousey was last seen in action at UFC 193 in November of 2015 against Holly Holm. “The Preachers Daughter” shocked the world that evening in Australia by knocking out the previously undefeated “Rowdy” with a devastating head kick.

Before Stephen Thompson walked out for his UFC welterweight title fight against Tyron Woodley at UFC 205 in New York, his brother-in-law Chris Weidman took to the octagon against Yoel Romero in a bout to determine the middleweight divisions next title contender. Weidman had a good opening round against “The Soldier of God”, but Romero was able to turn the tide in round two by utilizing his excellent wrestling skills.

When fight fans debate the hardest hitters in MMA, there are a few names that always seem to be mentioned. Some of these names are Mark Hunt, Roy Nelson, Dan Henderson, Melvin Manhoef and Junior Dos Santos. Another name that is almost included in any hardest-hitter debate is Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Rumble has earned his reputation as one of MMA’s most dangerous strikers with a whopping 16 knockout wins, 11 of which have occured in the UFC’s Octagon.

When Miesha Tate stepped onto the canvas with Raquel Pennington at UFC 205, it marked her opportunity to rebound from her loss of the UFC women’s bantamweight title. Instead of returning to the win column as the odds suggested she would, however, a lackadaisical looking Tate was soundly out-hustled from bell-to-bell, surrendering a unanimous decision to her foe as a result. In the moments after this decision was loss, Tate surprised the MMA community by announcing her retirement from the sport. Given her status as a women’s MMA trailblazer and a great of the bantamweight division, Tate’s retirement announcement was met primarily with well-wishes and pats on the back. Not everyone, however, was willing to let Tate ride off into the sunset on a positive note.

Last night, the UFC returned to sunny Melbourne, Australia with UFC Fight Night 101. Though most of the fights on the 13-bout lineup were somewhat slow, the main event was an absolutely thriller. That main event pitted Australia’s own Robert Whittaker against Derek Brunson in a clash of rising middleweight contenders. This fight was given the main event spot after the original headliner – a rematch between Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza – was scrapped due to injury.

Earlier this month, we saw women’s MMA trailblazer Miesha Tate hang up the gloves after a loss to Raquel Pennington at UFC 205. Not long thereafter, WEC and UFC veteran Manny Gamburyan did the same after a TKO loss to the dangerous Johnny Eduardo. Last night another experienced fighter rode off into the MMA sunset on the heels of a loss. That fighter was Australia’s Kyle Noke. He announced his retirement after a lopsided decision loss to Omari Akhmedov on the main card of UFC Fight Night 101 in Melbourne, Australia. Noke first announced his retirement in a post-fight Tweet.

A middleweight bout between Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson served as the main event of UFC Fight Night 101 in Melbourne, Australia. Round one begins and the fighters touch gloves. Whittaker presses forward. Brunson moves in then shoots in for a takedown. It is not there. Whittaker lands a crisp shot that appears to stun Derek. He shakes it off. Whittaker pressing forward. Brunson catches him with a right. He presses Robert against the fence. Brunson pushes off and fires off a combination. He stuns Whittaker. Robert circles out. Derek is chasing after him with wild punches here. He shoots in Robert stuffs the attempt. Again Brunson presses off and lands some big strikes. He is chasing after Robert here and landing some big shots. He shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Whittaker pops right back up and lands an uppercut followed by a right. Now Brunson is rocked. He continues to press forward however. He literally lunging in with his face. Robert lands another good right hand. He follows that up with a head kick and Brunson is rocked. Whittaker with punches now. Brunson finally goes down. More shots from the top by Robert and Herb Dean has seen enough.

A lightweight bout between Jake Matthews and Andrew Holbrook served as the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 101 in Melbourne, Australia. Round one begins and Holbrook presses forward. Matthews with a right hand. The fighters trade punches. A low kick scores for Matthews. Matthews with a right hand. Matthews grabs a headlock and drags Holbrook to the floor. Matthews goes for the back but he is to high and falls off. Matthews gets up, and they battle against the cage. They break and Matthews lands a right hand. Holbrook counters with a kick to the body. Holbrook shoots inside and gets Matthews to the floor. Holbrook tries for a choke. It is not there. Matthews pops up and gets to this feet. Holbrook with punches to close out the round.

A lightweight bout between Alex Volkanovski and Yusuke Kasuya took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 101 card in Melbourne, Australia. Round one begins and Kasuya lands a straight left to start. Volkanovski with a counter right. Volkanovski misses with a punch and Kasuya ducks under and scores a takedown. Volkanovski is able to scramble back to his feet. Volkanovski then scores a trip from the clinch and tries to grab the guillotine. No luck, but he does lift and gets Kasuya to the floor. Alex postures up and drives in a few punches. Elbows rattle in, as well. Volkanovski lands some decent shots from the top as round one comes to an end.

A light heavyweight bout between Khalil Rountree and Tyson Pedro took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 101 main card in Melbourne, Australia. Round one begins and Roundtree drops Pedro with a huge left hand. Tyson immediately pops back to his feet and quickly shoots in and scores a takedown. Roundtree is trying to wall-walk and get back to his feet. He does but Pedro is all over him. Tyson scores a trip and gets Khalil back to the floor. Tyson begins softening Rountree up with punches. He takes his back and secures a rear-naked choke. This one is over.

A women’s strawweight bout between Seo Hee Ham and Danielle Taylor kicked off tonight’s UFC Fight Night 101 main card in Melbourne, Australia. Round one begins and Ham quickly tries to close the distance. The women exchange shots and then Taylor circles out. Danielle scores with a nice shot to the body. Ham counters with a solid left hand over the top. An eye poke from Taylor stops the action. After a short break we restart and Ham lands another nice left hand. She is walking Taylor down. Ham lands a right hand. Taylor circles away and misses with a right of her own. Ham chases her down and lands another left. Taylor responds with an overhand right and then circles out. Seo Hee Ham presses the action and lands another crisp left hand. Taylor did not like that. Ham with another left and another. Taylor circles away. She looks to be in panic-mode here. Danielle lands a nice body kick. Ham eats it and continues to walk her down. Seo lands another left hand. She has Taylor on the run. Round one comes to an end.

It’s no secret that former UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Miesha Tate and former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey have a very long and bitter rivalry dating back to the Strikeforce days of both women’s careers. Earlier this month, Tate retired at the UFC’s historic UFC 205 card in New York, where she dropped a unanimous decision to Raquel Pennington, whom she coached on The Ultimate Fighter several years ago. Next month, Rousey will make her highly anticipated return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC 207 as she returns from her yearlong hiatus to fight UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes on the highly anticipated New Years Eve card.
