Eddie Alvarez says Nate Diaz turned down a fight with him

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017

It has now been several months since Eddie Alvarez’s knockout loss to Conor McGregor, which marked the end of his reign as UFC lightweight champion. Despite the time that’s elapsed since then, he still doesn’t have another fight booked. Alvarez has, however, spoken to the UFC about a few prospective opponents. One of these opponents has been the fan favorite Nate Diaz – an opponent Alvarez said he’d be very interested in. He explained his interest in this fight on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.

Nate Diaz has stayed true to himself since day one. Even with making the most money of his career in his last two fights that were some of the most successful pay-per-view events in UFC history with Conor McGregor, you won’t see the Stockton scrapper wearing any new tailored suits.

Demian Maia gives his scorecard for UFC 209's main event

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017

Last Saturday, in the main event of UFC 209, champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson fought for the UFC welterweight title. Just like their first fight, which occurred back in November and ended with a majority draw, this one was very close, as Woodley walked away with a hotly contested majority decision win. In the wake of this extremely close battle, Demian Maia, who is arguably the top contender in the UFC welterweight division, made an appearance on The MMA Hour and offered his scorecard for the fight. Contrary to the official decision, the Brazilian grappling specialist says he scored the fight for Wonderboy, and speculated that the judges were swayed by Woodley’s surge late in the fifth round.

Stephen Thompson issues statement on controversial UFC 209 loss to Tyron Woodley

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017

Last November, in the co-main event of UFC 205, Stephen Thompson stepped into the Octagon to challenge Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title. Unfortunately, the fight ended in a majority draw, which meant Thompson did not become the champion. Last weekend, in the main event of UFC 209, Thompson got a second crack at Woodley. Unfortunately for the challenger, he lost the fight via controversial majority decision, which marked his second failed attempt to unseat the current welterweight king.

Tyron Woodley and Dan Hardy get heated on Twitter

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017

Last weekend, in the main event of UFC 209, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley defended his title with a majority decision over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. While Woodley’s win was an important one, however, it was also incredibly close, and fairly unexciting as far as fights go. The slow nature of Woodley’s defeat of Thompson prompted backlash from many members of the MMA community, including UFC President Dana White. Another respected member of the MMA community to chime in on this fight was former welterweight title challenger turned analyst Dan Hardy.

Michael Bisping on Woodley-Thompson: If they’re the best welterweights in the world, then I should f*ck up GSP

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017

Earlier this month, we learned that middleweight champion Michael Bisping would next defend his title against former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. Given that St-Pierre stands out as the best welterweight in the history of our sport, this fight is a big deal for Bisping. Heading into this yet unscheduled contest, however, the middleweight champ is all confidence. His confidence only ballooned over the weekend, when he watched Tyron Woodley and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson rematch for the UFC welterweight title in the main event of UFC 209. This fight, which Woodley won with a controversial majority decision, was an undeniably slow one, and one that did not reflect especially well on the welterweight division.

Pros react to Dan Kelly's upset victory over Rashad Evans

Chris Taylor - March 5, 2017

Middleweight fighter Dan Kelly (13-1 MMA) improved his UFC record to an impressive 6-1 yesterday in Las Vegas by scoring a split-decision victory over former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans on the UFC 209 main card. Both Evans and Kelly had their own respective moments in the fight, but it seemed that Kelly’s forward pressure and willingness to go after Evans swayed the judges in his favor.

Athlete outfitting pay for UFC 209: 14 fighters get $2500

Tom Taylor - March 5, 2017

Last night the UFC returned to Las Vegas, Nevada with UFC 209. In the card’s co-main event, we saw welterweight champion Tyron Woodley narrowly defeat Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in a rematch of an exciting, 2016 draw. In the co-main event, we saw David Teymur score a close decision over Lando Vannata in an exciting lightweight war. Other highlights of the main card, finally, included Alistair Overeem’s crushing KO of Mark Hunt, Dan Kelly’s foiling of Rashad Evans’ middleweight debut, and Cynthia Calvillo’s abrupt submission defeat of Amanda Cooper. As always, the 22 fighters on this 11 fight card were compensated for wearing Reebok in the Octagon, which is the product of the UFC’s oft-criticized outfitting deal with the sports apparel company.

Chris Taylor - March 5, 2017

After being forced to withdraw from last night’s UFC 209 event in Las Vegas, UFC president Dana White is unsure what the future holds for undefeated Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov. “The Eagle” was supposed to square off with fellow top contender Tony Ferguson for the promotions interim lightweight title at yesterday’s event, however a bad weight cut forced the AKA product out of the highly anticipated fight.

After KO of Mark Hunt, Alistair Overeem picks his ideal next opponents

Tom Taylor - March 5, 2017

Last night, in the first bout of the UFC 209 main card, former Strikeforce, Dream and K-1 champ Alistair Overeem separated himself from a failed UFC heavyweight title shot against Stipe Miocic by dominating Mark Hunt to a crushing, third-round knockout. He earned this knockout with a beautifully timed knee and several followup punches. “I am very proud, but I am also very proud of my team,” Overeem said of his performance against Hunt (via Sherdog.com). This is a great group of guys surrounding me and we might be old, but we’re not done yet. We see a lot of things [when we watch film], we studied my opponent very extensively, all my coaches do, and I think that combined with my ability, technical ability, athletic ability, I’m able to put these guys away.”

Tom Taylor - March 5, 2017

Last night, in the first bout of the UFC 209 main card, heavyweight veteran Mark Hunt stepped into the Octagon for the first time since July against a fellow Pride veteran in Alistair Overeem. Though Hunt was not without his moments in this anticipated battle, he ultimately came up short, as he was clocked by an Overeem knee in the third round. In the wake of this disappointing loss, Hunt took to social media to address his fans, and update on his condition – particularly a leg he appeared to injure in the second round. Tyron Woodley on Dana White criticism: I'd like to see him get in there and fight 'Wonderboy'

Tom Taylor - March 5, 2017

Last night, in the main event of UFC 209, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley scored a majority decision win over challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, who he first fought to a majority draw back in November. While Woodley’s win was extremely important for his career, however, it was not particularly thrilling. The slow nature of Woodley and Thompson’s welterweight title rematch generated ample criticism from many notable members of the MMA community, including UFC President Dana White. Woodley, unsurprisingly, was not especially pleased with these comments from the UFC boss. The champ fired back at the UFC 209 post-fight press conference, defending his strategy in the fight, and challenging White to step into the cage and fight Thompson.
