More movement to go along with all the huge amount of daily traditional work: mitts, heavy bag, cardio and lots of sparring. Keeping the brain quick, the eyes sharp, the feet light. When such a zero impact drill is involved the 'software is upgraded without damaging the hardware' (John Kavanagh) and extra motor learning and re-patterning can occur at scenarios that are hard to target in traditional sparring in such dosages and frequency. At the same time these are not rehearsed or pre-set sequences. This will need to be transfered later into sparring but provides room for experimentation, growth, research and lots of extra practice to feed into sparring and technical work. UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes has been on a tear of the women’s bantamweight division over the past two years, going on a 5-fight win streak that saw her finish four of her five opponents. In addition, nearly one year ago, Nunes picked up a first round submission win over Miesha Tate to claim the women’s bantamweight championship in the main event of UFC 200. After winning the belt, Nunes turned around and defended the belt at UFC 207 against none other than former champion Ronda Rousey in a fight that served as Rousey’s highly anticipated return to the Octagon. When the two met in the Octagon, it took just 48 seconds for Nunes to finish Rousey with strikes.

When Cris Cyborg made her UFC debut in May of 2016, she did so at 140 pounds in a catchweight fight against Leslie Smith. At that time, the UFC had yet to create a women’s featherweight division, and Cyborg was adamant that she wouldn’t be able to make the bantamweight limit of 135 pounds. After running through Smith in under 90 seconds, Cyborg then fought Lina Lansberg in a highly anticipated showdown in Brazil. On the heels of Cyborg going 2-0 inside the Octagon, the UFC announced that they were creating a women’s featherweight division. Unfortunately for Cyborg, at that time she was suspended by USADA as a result of a pill she took to help her recover from the brutal weight cut leading up to the Lansberg fight.

UFC fan favorite Nick Diaz has been informed of a potential anti-doping violation by USADA after three “whereabouts failures” over the course of the past 12 months. Under the UFC’s partnership with USADA, fighters are required to notify USADA of their whereabouts at all times. This means that Diaz, who has beefed with USADA in the past for refusing to take random drug tests, has now been formally notified of a potential anti-doping violation. The UFC has released a statement on the situation, which reads:

The UFC rankings have been updated since UFC Fight Night 112 took place in Oklahoma City on Sunday night. In the main event of the evening, Kevin Lee scored a controversial submission win over Michael Chiesa. Referee Mario Yamasaki called an end to the fight before Chiesa tapped, perhaps thinking that Chiesa was choked unconscious. Chiesa immediately argued the stoppage and has filed an appeal to the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission to have the fight overturned to a no contest.

MMA veteran Nick Diaz has remained one of the most popular fighters in MMA despite the fact that he hasn’t fought in nearly three years. After his dominant run in Strikeforce, Diaz signed with the UFC and made his debut in 2011, when he defeated BJ Penn via unanimous decision. Diaz then dropped his next two fights, an interim welterweight scrap with Carlos Condit, and a unanimous decision to Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title. In his most recent fight, Diaz stepped into the Octagon against Anderson Silva in a highly anticipated showdown which was eventually deemed a ‘no contest’ as a result of drug testing failures for both men.
