Edson Barboza open to superfight with Jose Aldo at 145

UFC lightweight Edson Barboza is undoubtably one of the best strikers in the UFC’s lightweight division. In addition to 11 knockout wins in 19 professional fights, Barboza racked up a 25-3 professional kickboxing record, with 22 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

Fresh off a KO win over Beneil Dariush at ‘UFC Fight Night: Fortaleza’ back in March, Edson Barboza is looking to secure what could very well be the biggest fight of his professional career.

He spoke to ESPN to discuss the possibility of an epic battle of strikers:

“I don’t think that’s a crazy idea. I fought a couple Muay Thai fights at 145 pounds, a long time ago. I can make that weight. What about a superfight against Jose Aldo? Imagine that. Two Brazilian strikers. Why not? That’s a fight that would get me excited. He’s the best 145-pounder ever. If the UFC offered that, I would definitely sit down and think about it.”

“Khabib and Ferguson want to fight each other, but is the fight soon? Can it happen before 2020? Go ahead, fight each other, and then I’m next in line. For me, this division doesn’t have a real champion. Conor has fought one time in this division and then never defended his belt.If he comes back I do think we will fight. Conor doesn’t like to fight wrestlers. I’m a striker. If I fight with him I’ll say, ‘Bro, don’t even train wrestling. I will not try to take you down. This fight will happen on the feet.'”

Barboza, who is on a 3-fight win streak, of course is currently ranked at #4 on the UFC’s official lightweight rankings, behind #1 contender Khabib Nurmagomedov, #2 ranked Tony Ferguson, and #3 ranked former champion Eddie Alvarez, who lost the UFC title to Conor McGregor at UFC 205.

With the UFC looking to set a Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson fight to determine the lightweight #1 contender, and Eddie Alvarez & Dustin Poirier currently looking to have a rematch of their epic, but controversial, UFC 211 showdown, Barboza could very well be next in line for a lightweight title fight after the Nurmagomedov-Ferguson fight.
