Anthony Johnson discusses possible Jon Jones fight: it's a fight that Jon wants, and I want it too
Tom Taylor - July 31, 2017
Shortly after his UFC 210 loss to then light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, brick fisted contender Anthony Johnson announced his plan to retire from MMA. While the fighter nicknamed “Rumble” assured his retirement was probably for good, he did suggest he’d be willing to come back for a future bout with light heavyweight great Jon Jones. After Jones’ UFC 214 destruction of Daniel Cormier, which he witnessed live, Rumble’s interest in a comeback seems to be inflating. He discussed the possibility on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.
Tyron Woodley on GSP: if he does not fight me, by default I will be the best welterweight of all-time
Tom Taylor - July 31, 2017
Former UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, who has not fought since late 2013, is widely regarded as the greatest welterweight of all time. Current UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley, who has now defended the title three times, is keen to usurp St-Pierre’s rep as the welterweight GOAT. If Woodley could beat St-Pierre, of course, he’d have a much easier time claiming to be the best. Unfortunately, St-Pierre doesn’t seem interested in accepting a fight with Woodley, and is instead keen on fighting UFC middleweight Michael Bisping. Woodley thinks this is because St-Pierre is avoiding him – which should make him the welterweight GOAT by default.
Coach Duke Roufus drops hint about CM Punk's next fight
Tom Taylor - July 31, 2017
Duke Roufus serves as the coach of several of the UFC’s top fighters, from UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley, who defeated Demian Maia over the weekend, to UFC flyweight contender Sergio Pettis, who takes on Brandon Moreno in the main event of UFC Fight Night 114 this weekend. Roufus also serves as the head MMA coach of former WWE star CM Punk. Punk, of course, lost his lone MMA bout, which occured at UFC 203 last September, quite decisively. Though he showed off plenty of heart, he was tapped very quickly by his foe Mickey Gall.

Tom Taylor - July 30, 2017
On Saturday night, in the co-main event of UFC 214, Brazilian jiu jitsu wizard Demian Maia finally got his long-awaited welterweight title shot. His chance came against talented champion Tyron Woodley. Unfortunately for Maia and his many fans, Woodley was simply the better man on fight night. Of the 21 takedowns Maia attempted, not one was successful, while Woodley was able to out-strike him on the feet and nearly finish him with a punch early on. The end result was a clear unanimous decision win for the champ.
UFC salaries: Daniel Cormier pockets $1 million in loss to Jon Jones
Tom Taylor - July 30, 2017
Last night, in the main event of UFC 214, Daniel Cormier attempted to defend the UFC light heavyweight title opposite Jon Jones, his fiercest rival and the only man he’s lost to. Unfortunately, things didn’t go the way Cormier planned, as he was smashed with a third-round head-kick and polished off by a swarm of ground punches. Though Daniel Cormier can no longer lay claim to the UFC light heavyweight title, he will return home with a sizeable check. According to a report from MMAFighting.com, the former champ pocketed a whopping $1 million for his losing effort to Jon Jones. With this impressive payday, Cormier joins Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz, Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey as one of just five fighters to earn a million dollars or more for a single fight. Jones, meanwhile, earned a disclosed payday of $500,000. Like Cormier, it’s possible that he will receive a share of the PPV revenue.
Jimi Manuwa issues statement after quick KO loss to Volkan Oezdemir
Tom Taylor - July 30, 2017
On Saturday night, in the first bout of the stacked UFC 214 main card, British knockout artist Jimi Manuwa stepped onto the canvas with rapidly rising Swiss contender Volkan Oezdemir. The winner of this fight, it seemed, would become the next man in line for the winner of Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones light heavyweight championship main event. While Manuwa entered this fight as a notable betting favorite, things really couldn’t have gone much worse for him. After tying Oezdemir up against the cage, he ate a handful of clubbing uppercuts, and was sent stumbling across the cage by a left hand. A few followup punches later, and he was out like a light. It was a breakthrough win for Oezdemir, and a disaster for Manuwa.
After KO of Manuwa, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson praises Volkan Oezdemir: he made me look bad
Tom Taylor - July 30, 2017
Last night, in the first bout of the stacked UFC 214 main card, Switzerland’s Volkan Oezdemir stepped onto the canvas with British knockout artist Jimi Manuwa in perceived light heavyweight number-one-contender fight. Though Oezdemir entered this fight as noteworthy underdog, he passed his test with flying colors, mauling his accomplished foe to a first-round knockout victory. Because this bout was just Oezdemir’s third in the UFC, his emphatic defeat of Manuwa might have come as a bit of a surprise to many members of the MMA community. Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Johnson, however, was not surprised at all. Having spent the last few weeks training with Oezdemir at Combat Club in Lantana, Florida, he is well aware of what the Swiss bomber is capable of.

Tom Taylor - July 30, 2017
Last night, in the main event of the absolutely stacked UFC 214, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones finally stepped into the cage for their long-awaited rematch. Though Cormier started strong – arguably winning the early portions of the fight – he was cracked in the third by a monstrous Jones head-kick. A few followup ground strikes later and the deed was done. Daniel Cormier had lost by third-round knockout, and the light heavyweight title was once again around Jon Jones’ waist. In the moments after this emphatic stoppage, Jones celebrated with his team and family, while an emotional Cormier struggled to keep his footing, stumbling around the Octagon and shining a spotlight on the ugly, brain-rattling undertone of the sport we all love so much. See this worrisome footage of Cormier, which was captured by one of the UFC’s overhead cameras, below:
