When Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov step into the cage together at UFC 229, most fans expect one of two things to happen. The expectation is that McGregor will either knock Nurmagomedov out, our Nurmagomedov will drag McGregor into a grappling hell and possibly stop him on the mat. This feeling, of course, hinges on the perception that Nurmagomedov is not much of a striker, and McGregor is not much of a grappler. While Conor McGregor’s chief training partner Artem Lobov agrees that Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t present much danger in the striking department, he feels its erroneous to assume that McGregor can’t grapple with the lightweight champion.

Last weekend, on the main card of UFC Sao Paulo, 42-year-old MMA legend Antonio Rogerio Nogueira stepped into the Octagon for the first time in two years, having been sidelined by a lengthy United States Anti-Doping Agency suspension. His opponent in this return to action was brick-fisted 32-year-old Sam Alvey.  Given the circumstances of this matchup, many fans seemed to count Antonio Rogerio Nogueira out against Sam Alvey — and understandably so. The odds seemed to be stacked against him.

Former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is reportedly being pursued by Asian MMA powerhouse ONE Championship. The Singapore-based promotion has reportedly been competitive with both Bellator and the UFC in the negotiations for Alvarez’s employment. This interesting news was reported by Tarso Doria of MMABrasil.

Earlier this month, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley said that he would happily accept a fight with interim champion Colby Covington at UFC 230 this November 3 — so long as he was cleared by doctors. Unfortunately, we then learned that Tyron Woodley’s thumb is in pretty bad shape, and that he will need surgery as a result, which effectively rules out a fight with Colby Covington at UFC 230.

For a fleeting moment, Brazilian middleweight contender Thiago Santos was scheduled to fight British knockout artist Jimi Manuwa in the main event of last night’s UFC Sao Paulo card. That was after Manuwa’s original opponent, Glover Teixeira, withdrew from the card, and before Manuwa was forced off the card with an injury and replaced by middleweight Eryk Anders. Having dispatched Anders in the wild, last-minute UFC Sao Paulo main event, Thiago Santos is now planning to stick around in the UFC light heavyweight division for the time being, where he hopes to be rebooked for a fight with Jimi Manuwa.

Last night, in the main event of UFC Sao Paulo, Thiago Santos stepped into the cage with short-notice replacement opponent Eryk Anders. Toward the end of the third round, Santos began unloading on Anders on the ground, punishing him with thudding punches and elbows to the head. Remarkably, however, Anders survived until round’s end. Unfortunately, Anders could not regain his footing once the round was over. Although it his cornermen attempted to peel him off the canvas, he collapsed not once, but twice, which prompted referee Marc Goddard to wave the fight off.

Heading into his UFC Sao Paulo showdown with Francisco Trinaldo, long-time lightweight contender Evan Dunham assured that he would be retiring after the card. Unfortunately, this planned retirement fight didn’t go the way Evan Dunham planned, as he was put down by a vicious body shot from his Brazilian foe. While Dunham clearly would have preferred to retire on a victory, he assured post-fight that, despite the widespread trend of retired fighters mounting comebacks, his retirement will be permanent. In fact, this loss only served to reaffirm his choice to hang up the gloves.

Earlier this week, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was handed a 15 month suspension by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, retroactive to late July of 2017. This means that Jones will be able to fight again by November, if he so chooses. Ever since this announcement, Jones’ former opponent Alexander Gustafsson has been calling him out. Alexander Gustafsson, to remind, gave Jon Jones his toughest test to date at UFC 165 in 2013. In fact, many fans feel Gustafsson did enough to earn the win over Jones.

A light heavyweight bout between Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders served as the headliner of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 137 event in Sao Paulo. Thiago Santos was initially scheduled to meet Jimi Manuwa at the event, replacing former title challenger Glover Teixeira who was forced to pullout with an injury. However, Manuwa would also suffer an injury and thus had to be replaced by perennial middleweight contender Eryk Anders.

A welterweight bout between Alex Oliveira and Carlo Pedersoli served as the co-headliner of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 137 event in Sao Paulo. “Cowboy” enters tonight’s contest having won five of his past six fights. Oliveira (18-4-1 MMA) was most recently seen in action at April’s UFC on FOX event where he scored a submission victory over former UFC interim welterweight title holder Carlos Condit.

Renan Barao (34-6 MMA) entered tonight’s contest having lost four of his past five fights. Prior to that Barao was on an amazing hot streak that saw him go 20-1.

A women’s strawweight bout between Randa Markos and Marina Rodriguez kicked off tonight’s UFC Fight Night 137 main card from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The fight proved to be an absolute thriller with Randa Markos dominating round one before Marina Rodriguez was able to turn the tide in round two.
