Ilia Topuria breaks silence after stunning title loss at UFC White House

Former UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria isn’t making any excuses after his stunning loss to Justin Gaethje at the White House.
The UFC’s historic night on the White House lawn ended with an all-time upset at the hands of Justin Gaethje.
Gaethje, 37, defeated reigning UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria by corner stoppage after four rounds of back-and-forth action. After several failed pursuits of the undisputed UFC lightweight championship, Gaethje climbed the mountain and handed Topuria his first career defeat in the cage.
It was a shocking loss for Topuria after he entered UFC White House as a significant favorite to hand Gaethje another title fight loss. The defeat ends arguably the greatest three-fight run in UFC history after Topuria knocked out Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, and Alexander Volkanovski in consecutive appearances.
Topuria will deal with the aftermath of defeat for the first time in his combat sports career, and despite weeks of trash talk with Gaethje, he handled his first setback with class.
Ilia Topuria makes ‘no excuses’ after stunning loss to Justin Gaethje
In a recent Instagram post, Topuria congratulated Gaethje on his performance and called for an immediate rematch.
“Justin, congratulations. You said you’d leave your mark on my face… and you did. You took the sight from my right eye in the first round, and by the end of the second, from my left too,” Topuria said.
“No excuses. I had one of the best camps of my life. I came in sharp, prepared, and ready. Last night was your night. That’s the nature of this game. Glory and pain walk side by side. I’ll heal. I’ll rest. And I’ll return stronger, wiser, and far more dangerous.
“And trust me… this story between us is far from over. We will have our rematch.”
Speculation is swirling that Topuria suffered a broken orbital bone in his fight with Gaethje, as proposed by Daniel Cormier and Joe Rogan on the UFC White House broadcast. If that’s the case, Topuria could be on the sidelines for the remainder of 2026.
Next for Gaethje is a likely showdown with top contender Arman Tsarukyan for his first lightweight title defense. If he retains the belt, Gaethje could face Topuria upon the Spaniard’s return to the Octagon.
