Ian Machado Garry deserves UFC title shot against Islam Makhachev, says UFC commentator

UFC commentator Jon Anik has made a case for Ian Machado Garry challenging for the UFC welterweight championship next.
As we know, Islam Makhachev is expected to defend the UFC welterweight title at some point later this year. However, it’s not clear as to who exactly he’s going to face – although Ian Machado Garry definitely seems to be one of the names that is getting brought up more often than not.
Machado Garry has been a man on a mission ever since he entered the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He wants to win gold, and it certainly seems like he on the right trajectory. Unfortunately, Islam Makhachev just so happens to be one of the most impressive, dominant fighters of this or any other generation.
In a recent podcast appearance, Jon Anik had the following to say about Makhachev vs Machado Garry.
Anik on Machado Garry’s title hopes
“Sometimes I just throw my hands up and wonder what is the internal promotional metric, or the driving force that would give Ian Machado Garry this title shot as opposed to Michael Morales,” Anik told MMA Junkie. “Is it a matchup thing? Do they maybe make more money if one guy is the champion? I don’t know the extent Ian Machado Garry moves the needle opposed to Michael Morales.
“I think, straight meritocracy … I just feel like Makhachev vs. Machado Garry is the fight. And I think it’s a fascinating stylistic matchup as well. I think Morales is eventually going to get there. Morales is looking like an absolute world beater. But depending on what their interim methodology is, I think Machado Garry is going to be the guy. And I think he’s the most deserving.”
