Tom Taylor - November 21, 2016
Yeah, we know, pro wrestling isn’t real. That’s precisely what happened on Sunday night, when Lesnar stepped into the WWE ring with Bill Goldberg. Moments into the match, Goldberg knocked the former UFC champ to the mat. Unfortunately, the landmark card was ceaselessly battered by injuries, PED-busts and more, leaving the UFC scrambling to keep the its lineup in tact until it finally occured on July 9 of this year. One of the organization’s key efforts to assure UFC 200 was up to snuff in spite of the many blows its was dealt was their signing of former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Lesnar, who won the title from Randy Couture in 2008 and surrendered it to Cain Velasquez in 2010, has spent the last few years competing as a pro wrestler for WWE. Despite being under contract with this organization, he was allowed to compete in a “one-off” return to the Octagon in UFC 200’s co-main event, where he took on Brick fisted Kiwi Mark Hunt.

Given that Hunt has long stood out as one of the UFC’s 10-best heavyweights, and that Lesnar had not competed in mixed martial arts almost five years, this was a pretty impressive feat. Regrettably, it was later announced that Lesnar had failed both in-competition and out-of-competition drug tests. The former champ popped for the substance clomiphene, an estrogen blocker often used to counterbalance the testosterone boost caused by steroid use. This unfortunate twist stamped a big, ugly asterisk beside his defeat of Hunt.
