Back in July of 2016, in the last-minute main event of UFC 200, Brazilian talent Amanda Nunes swiped the women’s bantamweight title from Miesha Tate with a dominant, first-round submission win. Later in the year, in the main event of December’s UFC 207, Nunes defended that title with an even more dominant win, brutalizing returning former champion Ronda Rousey in just 48 seconds. Speaking to FloCombat.com in the weeks after her win, Nunes said that she didn’t think anything could stop her from defeating Rousey at UFC 207 – she was simply too focused.

Not long ago, former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm suggested that, if she wins her upcoming featherweight title fight with Germaine de Randamie, she’d then like to challenge Amanda Nunes for bantamweight gold. If she were to defeat Nunes in this prospective showdown, she’d join Conor McGregor as one of just two fighters in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes concurrently. As it turns out, however, Nunes has similar hopes for her career. On Saturday evening, Nunes took to Twitter to request a shot at the winner of Holm and De Randamie’s looming featherweight title showdown, explaining that she too would like to enter the history books as a two-division UFC champion.

Late last month, in the main event of UFC 207, Ronda Rousey made her long-awaited return to the Octagon opposite reigning women’s bantamweight Queen Amanda Nunes. Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer had a front-row seat for this wild fight, and the buildup to it. During a recent appearance on The Pony Hour podcast, Buffer weighed in on Rousey’s demeanor during fight week. Contrary to her abrupt loss, he said she seemed to be very focused.

Throughout 2016, there were talks of the UFC forming a women’s flyweight division at 125 pounds. While the promotion never officially announced the formation of the division, they held a women’s flyweight fight between Joanne Calderwood vs. Valerie Letourneau which was an extremely spectacular fight. Following the fight, UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk revealed in an interview that if the UFC moved forward with creating a women’s flyweight division, she planned to move up in weight in hopes of becoming the first two-division women’s champion. To close out 2016 however, the UFC announced that they would be forming a women’s featherweight division, likely due to the dominance of Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg over the course of the year fighting at 140 pounds. Although Cyborg turned down two women’s featherweight title fights before it was then revealed that she had potentially violated USADA’s anti-doping policy, the UFC has moved forward with their inaugural women’s featherweight title fight between Holly Holm and Germaine De Randamie.

When Nunes joined the UFC in 2013, she immediately went on a 2-fight win streak as she TKOd Sheila Gaff and Germaine de Randamie in her first two UFC scraps. In that fight, Zingano picked up a dominant third round TKO win to snap Nunes’ 2-0 streak. In the main event of UFC 207, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey stepped into the Octagon for the first time since her UFC 193 KO loss to Holly Holm last year. The loss marked the first of Rousey’s career, and resulted in ‘Rowdy’ taking an extended period of time off from the Octagon to take care of nagging injuries, and refocus before once again entering the Octagon. In the loss to Holly Holm last year, Rousey’s coach Edmond Tarverdyan, received a considerable amount of criticism for instilling a false sense of confidence in Rousey in regards to her striking. Following her loss to Holm, several members of the MMA community offered to help train Rousey in striking so as to help round-out her game. With that being said, leading up to her UFC 207 scrap with Amanda Nunes, many members of the MMA community also expressed concern for Rousey due to the fact that she once again returned to Glendale Fighting Club to train with Tarverdyan.
