Amanda Nunes eyes gold in two divisions

By Tom Taylor - January 15, 2017

Not long ago, former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm suggested that, if she wins her upcoming featherweight title fight with Germaine de Randamie, she’d then like to challenge Amanda Nunes for bantamweight gold. If she were to defeat Nunes in this prospective showdown, she’d join Conor McGregor as one of just two fighters in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes concurrently. As it turns out, however, Nunes has similar hopes for her career.

On Saturday evening, Nunes took to Twitter to request a shot at the winner of Holm and De Randamie’s looming featherweight title showdown, explaining that she too would like to enter the history books as a two-division UFC champion.

“I’m ready to make WMMA history… I want the winner,” Nunes said in her post, which also featured the official poster for Holm and De Randamie’s title fight.

This fight between Holm and De Randamie will go down at UFC 208 on February 11. Holm will enter the bout on an unfortunate two fight losing-streak, having lost by submission to Miesha Tate and by decision to Valentina Shevchenko since she shocked the world by knocking out Ronda Rousey to win the bantamweight crown in late 2015. De Randamie, meanwhile, will enter the fight on a two-fight win-streak, having stopped Larissa Pachecho and Anna Elmose in her two most recent bouts. Her most recent loss, which occurred in November of 2013, was dealt by Nunes.

When we last saw Nunes in action, she spoiled the return of Ronda Rousey in just 48 seconds, defending the UFC women’s bantamweight crown in the process. Prior to that win, she choked out Miesha Tate to win the title. She earned her shot at Tate with decisive defeats of Shayna Baszler, Sara McMann and Valentina Shevchenko.
