Former UFC lightweight contender Gray Maynard shared a story of how he was given a “hush money” bonus by the UFC following his war with Frankie Edgar at UFC 125. Maynard and Edgar put on one of the greatest lightweight title fights of all-time back at UFC 125 in January 2011. The two veterans fought back-and-forth for 25 minutes in what was scored a split draw by the judges. It’s a fight that will more than likely land in the UFC Hall of Fame’s “Fight Wing” sometime in the near future.

For a time, Gray Maynard was regarded as one of the very best lightweights on earth. In fact, he very nearly captured the UFC lightweight title, battling then champion Frankie Edgar to a razor close 2011 draw. Since then, however, it’s been a turbulent flight for Maynard. Since his near title win against Edgar, he has gone a tough 3-6, defeating Clay Guida, Fernando Bruno and Teruto Ishihara, but losing Frankie Edgar, TJ Grant, Nate Diaz, Ross Pearson, Alexander Yakovlev and Ryan Hall, with four of those defeats coming by way of knockout.

Two-time UFC lightweight title challenger Gray Maynard, who now competes in the UFC featherweight division, will face a stiff test in his next fight. The hard-nosed veteran will be taking on Japanese Team Alpha Male prospect Teruto Ishihara. Maynard and Ishihara will collide at the Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale this July 7, in the midst of the UFC’s International Fight Week, in glimmering Las Vegas, Nevada. The UFC officially announced this featherweight booking shortly after a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Earlier this month at the ‘Ultimate Fighter: Tournament of Champions’ finale, TUF winner Ryan Hall squared off against UFC veteran Gray Maynard in a fight which had all the makings of an old-school ‘style vs. style’ matchup. Maynard of course looked to keep the fight standing in hopes of landing a big punch and picking up yet another knockout win. Hall on the other hand was looking to take the fight to the mat and use his elite level Jiu-Jitsu to secure a submission win. With that being said, the way Hall looked to get the fight to the ground was a bit controversial. Upon Maynard closing the distance, Hall would slip a punch and drop to the canvas looking for a leg lock on ‘The Bully’.
