Frankie Edgar might “jump in there again” if Max Holloway isn’t ready after UFC 222

If things had gone according to plan, former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar would be challenging Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight title in the main event of UFC 222 on March 3. Regrettably, an injury forced Holloway out of this planned fight, which briefly left Edgar without an opponent.

Frankie Edgar, UFC 222

After several frantic days of searching, the UFC was able to book Edgar a new opponent in fellow featherweight contender Brian Ortega. The pair will fight in the UFC 222 co-main event, with women’s featherweight Cris Cyborg and challenger Yana Kunitskaya now fighting i the headlining spot.

Unfortunately for Edgar, there will be no title will be on the line in his co-main event battle with Ortega. The hope, of course, is that a win will earn him a rescheduled title fight with Holloway. In a recent interview with FloCombat, however, Edgar admitted that if Holloway isn’t ready soon after UFC 222, he’d consider taking another fight in the meantime.

“I want to go out there and fight March 3 and if Max is ready to go fairly quick, then yeah I’ll probably wait for Max,” Edgar said. “But if he’s still maybe not ready until the end of summer, I might jump in there again. I want to fight. This is what I want to do. The belt, it is a goal of mine, I don’t want to say I’ve lost sight of that but I’ve been waiting around and two times so close didn’t come. I just want to fight.

“March 3, fight. If Max is ready to go in June that would be perfect. If he’s still not ready to go, I might jump in there again. Who knows.”

Do you think Frankie Edgar will ever get the chance to battle Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight title?
