Fight of the Night: Demian Maia vs. Rory MacDonald Demian Maia surprised a lot of people with his performance in the opening round of his bout with Rory MacDonald. Some thought his dominant and controlling offense should have rewarded him a 10-8 round, which meant MacDonald would have to fight twice as strong in rounds two and three to make a comeback. MacDonald utilized body kicks to chop the gas-tank of Maia in half and that gave him a lot of momentum throughout the remainder of the fight. Despite being exhausted, Maia continued to press forward and attempt takedowns which made for a very exciting fight.

Demian Maia surprised the world after such a dominant first round. He secured a takedown early on and eventually made it to full mount where he landed shots at will. A bloodied MacDonald finally made it back to his feet but he ate a couple punches from Maia that forced him to think twice. The round was so one sided, it could be argued that it was a 10-8.

Mike Pyle and TJ Waldburger put on a competitive, even bout as they were both trying to bounce back from losses in their last outing in the octagon. Well, it was even until the third round.

Thompson seemed to have been one step ahead of Whittaker throughout the entire first round. Whenever Whittaker would throw a cross, Thompson already started to side-step it a split-second before hand. Thompson aggravated Whittaker by constantly changing levels, causing Whittaker to block the wrong part of his body as Thompson landed a kick.

The ladies had the honor of closing out the preliminary bouts tonight with a bout between Alexis Davis and Jessica Eye. Eye was looking to redeem herself in the eyes of the public after mixup of her failed drug test in her last octagon outing, but she will have to wait until next time to do that.

The bout between Cody Gibson and Aljamain Sterling looked promising from the opening minutes of the bout, but the pace faded quickly and it turned into a grappling contest. Even though the pace of the fight slowed down, it was still exciting to watch.
