Boxing legend and current promoter Oscar De La Hoya and UFC President Dana White have been battling on the idea of the potential boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.
De La Hoya came out recently with a lengthy statement on social media asking fans to not buy into the “circus” matchup between Mayweather vs. McGregor that will set the sport of boxing back. White responded and said the fight that De La Hoya just put on between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chaves Jr. was a terrible match and that it was funny how De La Hoya was campaigning for a Canelo vs. McGregor match just a few months ago. With De La Hoya’s big matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin coming up, White advised De La Hoya to be confident in his promotional bout coming up and to stop bad mouthing others.
De La Hoya was recently on SportsCenter and was asked to respond to White’s comments (at 4:40 of the video) where he continued his campaign that Mayweather and McGregor is a complete mismatch that will be 12 rounds of Mayweather boxing McGregor.
“Hey it’s going to be entertaining, yes,” De La Hoya said. “But, what happens in the sport of boxing, that I know, that I’m an expert in, is that the first two, three rounds is going to be entertaining because they want to see McGregor knockout Mayweather. Ok, but the next rounds, the next nine rounds are gonna be boring because Mayweather is going to know how to box him and figure him out. And, Mayweather is a purist. He’s the best boxer in the planet today. There’s no doubt about that. That’s exactly why I’m saying this.”
