Conor McGregor says next UFC fight must be Max Holloway trilogy after freak injury: “I was fully calm and relaxed”

Conor McGregor is targeting a trilogy bout with Max Holloway to make up for his unforeseen injury.
McGregor had planned on making the walk for his first fight in five years, which is exactly what he did at UFC 329. What the “Notorious” one wasn’t expecting was for his rematch with Holloway to be stopped before the action ever truly got going. That’s because McGregor suffered a right knee injury when he awkwardly landed off a jumping kick attempt.
Holloway sensed something was wrong immediately, and urged referee Mike Beltran to stop the fight. After seeing the Irishman struggle to stay on his feet, the fight came to an end with Holloway being awarded the TKO victory.
McGregor took to social media to respond to a fan who asked if he has interest in another fight with Dustin Poirier or a clash with Michael Chandler. “Mystic Mac” firmly has his sights set on “Blessed” again.
“It has to be Holloway,” McGregor replied.
Another fan joked that McGregor should avoid a “Bruce Lee style” kick in his next outing. McGregor insisted that Holloway wasn’t going to be able to have success in the fight if the injury never occurred.
“I could have walked into the centre of that Octagon and taken a phone call,” McGregor responded. “There was zero forward attack coming at me nor was there going to be. Next time. I felt fully calm and relaxed. It was going to the shop for lunch. Lunch being the opponent.”
Some remain skeptical about McGregor’s fighting future. He had already recovered from a broken tibia and fibula of his left leg after the trilogy fight with Poirier. He was scheduled to return in 2024 against Chandler, but he suffered a separate injury setback. Many wonder if McGregor’s body can keep up with the demand of pro MMA competition anymore.
