Retired UFC star doubts Nate Diaz turned down more money to fight Conor McGregor for Netflix debut

Dana White told reporters that he was in talks with Nate Diaz before he accepted an offer he couldn’t refuse to fight on Netflix, and one UFC veteran believes it.

Diaz will be featured on the undercard of Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano on May 16. The Stockton native will collide with Mike Perry in a five-round MMA clash. The bout will be contested at welterweight.

During a recent edition of MMAFighting.com‘s “The Fighter vs. The Writer,” Matt Brown said he won’t buy into the narrative that UFC offered more money to Diaz than Most Valuable Promotions and Netflix did.

“I lean towards believing Dana on this,” Brown said. “He got an offer he couldn’t refuse. Now how Nate’s spinning it with the way the contract is structured, maybe there’s something behind the scenes under some layers that we’re not privy to just yet. But there’s no way he’s not making more money.”

Brown continued by saying that Diaz has long been about waiting for the right opportunity to maximize his payday, and this is no exception.

“I don’t believe it for a second that he’s not making more money with this Netflix deal, however that plays out, his bank account ends up with more money from this fight than it does in the UFC or he doesn’t take the fight,” Brown said. “He’s going to pick the highest bidder. I don’t think that’s unique to [Nate Diaz], but I think he understands this is prize fighting. He’s fighting for money. He’s going to take the highest pay.”

This is said to be a one-fight deal for Diaz, so he will be free to sign elsewhere once his bout with Perry has wrapped up. Whether or not Diaz will ever return to UFC remains to be seen.
