Carlos Ulberg’s coach hit the panic button before his fighter delivered a stunning knockout victory at UFC 327.

Ulberg found himself in a rough spot during his vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship fight against Jiri Prochazka this past Saturday. Early on, “Black Jag” suffered a knee injury that noticeably impacted his movement. While it appeared Prochazka was in prime position to finish the fight, Ulberg delivered a crushing hook that floored his opponent. Ulberg then finished the fight with some follow-up punches to become the new 205-pound king.

Daniel Cormier was at the commentary desk during the shocking turn of events, and he was able to interview Ulberg’s coach, Eugene Bareman, once UFC 327 wrapped up for his YouTube channel. Bareman admitted that he was on edge when he realized that Ulberg was hurt.

“From the jaws of defeat,” Bareman said. “Man, trust me. Our heart was jumping out of our chest. I was panicking the most, but a lot of our coaches were ok with it because they knew Jiri would kind of come to us then, and they were kind of right. That’s why I got brilliant coaching partners as well.”

Bareman credited Ulberg’s patience for getting the job done despite having to go through circumstances that were far from ideal.

“It’s just timing, right? Carlos is about perfect timing and precision,” Bareman said. “He’s not like a big power puncher like a lot of light heavyweights. It’s just all about the precise timing and just catching people with it moving forward. So, that’s exactly what he did. I was just relieved because you would’ve seen the panic on my face, brother, when that knee was compromised. All of us know how to fight when you get injured like that, and we know that it’s a very tough road from that point onwards, isn’t it?”

It’s unknown where Ulberg goes from here, as the severity of his knee injury isn’t known. If he managed to avoid a serious tear, then he might be able to make his first title defense in a few months. Whether or not Ulberg will get good news from his doctor remains to be seen.
