At UFC 205 back in November, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley stepped into the Octagon to fight streaking welterweight contender Stephen Thompson in a highly anticipated showdown. For Thompson, he was looking to build on his 7-fight win streak which saw him go undefeated for four years as he racked up impressive wins over top ranked fighters such as Johny Hendricks, Rory MacDonald, and Jake Ellenberger to name just a few. For Tyron Woodley, he was looking to make his first successful title defense after winning the UFC welterweight championship by knocking Robbie Lawler out cold in the 1st round of their UFC 201 scrap.

In addition to being the final scrap of the year, UFC 207’s main event scrap between Ronda Rousey and Amanda Nunes was one of the most highly anticipated showdowns of the year. Unfortunately for Rousey, while she was hoping to make a successful return to the Octagon following her UFC 193 loss to Holly Holm in November of 2015, it took just 48 seconds for Amanda Nunes to out-strike Rousey and force referee Herb Dean to stop the fight due to TKO.

Their agreeing to do so, of course, only means so much. Woodley, after all, currently has his hands full with streaking welterweight contenders like Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Demian Maia. Bisping, on the other hand, has an extremely dangerous challenge on his horizon in former Olympian Yoel Romero. Back in July, ‘The Chosen One’ Tyron Woodley picked up the biggest win of his MMA career as he knocked out reigning UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in the first round of their UFC 201 main event scrap to claim the UFC welterweight championship. Following the win, Woodley sparked some controversy as he shut down welterweight #1 contender Stephen Thompson on the Fox Sports 1 post-fight show, opting to call out former welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre, and MMA veteran Nick Diaz. Diaz, who was still suspended at the time of the callout, was ineligible to fight due to not paying his fine with the NSAC.

Tyron Woodley and Conor McGregor, who are the UFC welterweight and lightweight champions respectively, have had plenty of memorable exchanges over the last few weeks. Some of them have been on social media, others were backstage in the buildup to November’s UFC 205. One of Woodley and McGregor’s first interactions occurred at a UFC 205 pre-fight press conference, when McGregor attempted to throw a chair at his then-upcoming opponent, Eddie Alvarez. As the chaos unfolded, Woodley busted out his camera to film the ordeal, and later posted the video on social media, accompanied by the caption “how you act when you know someone gone break it up!”

Earlier this month, top ranked welterweight contender Stephen Thompson stepped into the Octagon with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the co-main event of UFC 205 for a highly anticipated showdown. The fight was an extremely close one, with many scoring the fight three rounds to two in Thompson’s favor, but giving Woodley a 10-8 round in the fourth round. This ultimately led to the fight being scored a majority draw, with Woodley retaining his welterweight championship.

The idea of Conor McGregor moving up to fight Tyron Woodley for the welterweight title is surely a possibility with the way “The Notorious” has been working. Despite McGregor having a 1-1 UFC record at 170, the most recent welterweight title challenger, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson feels that “The Notorious” isn’t physically big enough to compete with the UFC welterweights. McGregor has fought twice in the UFC at 170. However, both welterweight bouts were against Nate Diaz, who has spent most of his career in the UFC lightweight division.
