With surgery complete, recently retired Tito Ortiz drops big hint about comeback fight

Earlier this year, former UFC light heavyweight champion, UFC Hall of Famer, Bellator contender, and all-around MMA legend Tito Ortiz announced that he’d be retiring from the sport after his Bellator 170 main event battle with rival Chael Sonnen. When Ortiz won this bout by tapping Sonnen in the first-round, he appeared to be ready to ride off into the sunset. Apparently, however, the 42 year old legend is already gearing up for a comeback. On Saturday, he posted to Instagram, announcing that he had undergone a successful neck surgery, and that once his recovery was complete, it would be time to kick Chael Sonnen’s ass.

Back in January, in the main event of Bellator 170, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz retired with an abrupt submission win over three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen. Though you might expect this outcome to mark the end on the pair’s beef, it didn’t. Several months later, during Sonnen’s Bellator NYC battle with rival Wanderlei Silva, Ortiz could be seen chirping him from cage-side. Now several months removed from this battle with Silva, which he won by unanimous decision, Sonnen discussed Ortiz’s mid-fight actions with Duane Finley of FloCombat.com.

There has been quite a bit of buzz surrounding a potential return to competition for former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell. There was talk from his longtime coach John Hackleman saying his blessing would depend on who the opponent is and Liddell himself did not give a definitive answer on if we will be seeing him fight again. There was also the lunch meeting between Bellator boss Scott Coker and Lidell. More speculation grew when Liddell posted a photo of him and longtime rival Tito Ortiz in a staredown photo they took together where Liddell said in the caption, “Why not?”

Over the last few weeks former UFC light heavyweight champion and bona fide MMA legend Chuck Liddell has hinted several times that he’s interested in making a return to the cage. A few days ago, the former champ through more gas on the fire by sharing a photo of him and long-time rival Tito Ortiz squaring off, accompanied by the caption “why not?” Just like that, the MMA world was buzzing about the possibility of a rematch between the two legends.

In 2012, former UFC champion Tito Ortiz competed in the UFC for the final time as he was handed his third straight loss, his 7th over the course of the past 8 fights. Ortiz then signed with Bellator MMA in 2014. When Ortiz made his highly anticipated Bellator debut, he did so against Alexander Shlemenko, where he picked up a 1st round submission win over the Bellator MMA vet, marking his first win in three years. In his next fight, Ortiz stepped into the cage for a highly anticipated grudge match with fellow UFC veteran Stephan Bonnar. Ortiz won the fight via split decision. Unfortunately for Ortiz, in his next fight he dropped his next fight to Liam McGeary in a failed bid for the Bellator MMA title.

It’s no secret that UFC President Dana White and UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz certainly have their fair share of animosity dating back many years. At one point in time, the two men were set to step into a boxing ring to settle their beef, however despite months of training on both men’s side, and the event making it all the way up to weigh-ins, the NSAC forced their way into the matter, demanding that they oversee the bout. Ultimately, the exhibition boxing match was scrapped.

Ultimately, Ortiz picked up a 1st round submission win, catching Sonnen in a rear naked choke after Sonnen let go of a Japanese Necktie submission. Prior to that however, Sonnen had Ortiz caught in a guillotine, where he says that Ortiz verbally tapped out.

Ortiz won this fight in impressive fashion, tapping Sonnen with a rear-naked choke in the first round to ride off into the sunset on a win. Unfortunately, Ortiz’s big win was marred by widespread speculation that the fight might have been fixed. Many fans, and even a few reputable MMA media members, questioned the legitimacy of Ortiz’s win, saying that it didn’t look like his choke was properly locked up.

The fight didn’t last long, as Ortiz quickly managed to secure the takedown and ultimately submit Sonnen with a rear-naked choke. While Sonnen tapped to the choke, viewers were quick to question the legitimacy of the fight, questioning whether or not the fight was fixed after footage emerged of Ortiz appearing to tap Sonnen’s hand, in what many assume was a signal. Last Saturday, Bellator MMA returned to our screens with Bellator 170, an exciting card in Los Angeles, California. This card’s headlining slot was filled by a light heavyweight bout between retiring MMA legend Tito Ortiz, and fan favorite Chael Sonnen, who was returning from a hiatus of three years. Though many expect Sonnen to be too much for the aging Ortiz, Ortiz actually ended up winning this one handily, submitting Sonnen with a rear-naked choke just over two minutes into the first round. Ortiz’s victory was so lopsided, in fact, that some fans – and even some respected media members – suggested the fight might have been a fix.
