In the co-main event of UFC 205, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley stepped into the Octagon in hopes of defending his welterweight title for the first time. Woodley was quick to take Stephen Thompson down in the first round, landing some ground & pound to bloody up Wonderboy’s face. Thompson went on to pick Woodley apart, pressuring the champ against the cage in the second and third rounds. In the fourth round, things got interesting as Woodley dropped Thompson, nearly finishing him via KO before then nearly finishing the fight via submission. Somehow, Thompson managed to survive the round, and then come back in the fifth in impressive fashion as he outstruck Woodley.

Saturday evening in New York, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson will step into the Octagon with Tyron Woodley for a highly anticipated welterweight showdown in a fight which will serve as Woodley’s first title defense since winning the belt at UFC 201 earlier this year. Despite Woodley calling out Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz following his UFC 201 win over Robbie Lawler, it was Thompson and his 7-fight win streak that were given the crack at the welterweight championship at the UFC’s historic Madison Square Garden card this Saturday.

This weekend, in the co-main event of the blockbuster UFC 205, new welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will attempt the first defense of his title against streaking karate specialist Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. In advance of this massive welterweight showdown, Woodley’s current coach Duke Roufus appeared on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour to discuss his student’s looming challenge. On the show, Roufus was asked for a prediction as to how the match will go, and likened it to a 1971 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. The bout, which was the first of three between the two boxing legends, saw Frazier upset Ali with a unanimous decision win. In Roufus’ mind, Woodley will play the part of Frazier.

Ahead of the fight, Woodley has enlisted the help of young standout Sage Northcutt, who is now training at Roufusport in Milwaukee with Woodley for the fight.

When Stephen Thompson defeated long-time welterweight contender Rory MacDonald back in June, he seemed like a shoo-in for a shot at the winner of Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley’s looming welterweight title fight. When Woodley stole Lawler’s belt with a first-round KO, however, Thompson’s immediate future became somewhat nebulous. Right off the bat, the new champ Woodley began demanding his first defense be a “money fight” with a star like Georges St-Pierre or Nick Diaz, rather than a fight with a hard-working number-one-contender in Thompson. Indeed, there was a stretch when it looked like Thompson would be passed over the title shot, even in spite of his incredible, seven-fight win-streak.

On the post-fight show, presumptive #1 contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson made his case for a fight with Woodley, pointing out that he is on a 7-fight win streak that has seen him most recently defeat Rory MacDonald. Woodley was quick to shut Thompson down on live TV, brushing ‘Wonderboy’ off as he called for a fight with Georges St-Pierre or Nick Diaz instead.

Instead, the champ infamously explained on Fox Sports that he is interested in “money fights” with the likes of Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre. Unsurprisingly, Woodley’s stance is not going over well with Thompson. On a recent episode of Submission Radio, Thompson addressed Woodley’s strange reluctance to fight him.

In the main event of UFC on Fox 21, UFC welterweight Demian Maia dazzled with a first-round submission of long-time contender Carlos Condit. The win extended the Brazilian’s streak to six, and under slightly different conditions, probably would have catapulted him directly into a title fight with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Unfortunately for Maia, the welterweight division is also home to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, a streaking striker with seven straight wins behind him. Unless the UFC throws us a serious curveball, Thompson will be given the next shot at Woodley, while Maia will have to wait to fight the winner of that bout.

Now, all he wants his a welterweight title shot–ideally at UFC 205 in New York City this November. Unfortunately, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who won the the belt by snuffing Robbie Lawler in July, seems to have other plans. If the new champ has his way, his first defense will be a ‘money fight’ opposite welterweight great Georges St-Pierre, or fan favorite Nick Diaz–not against Thompson.

After Tyron Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 201 at the end of last month, the newly crowned champ shut down Thompson on the Fox Sports 1 post-fight show, calling out Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz instead.

When Tyron Woodley stepped into the Octagon Saturday night in the main event of UFC 201 to fight Robbie Lawler, welterweight #1 contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson was paying close attention. Thompson, who was on the FS1 broadcasting team for the evening, knew he would likely be fighting the winner of the scrap. Ultimately, Tyron Woodley knocked out Lawler in just minutes to win the welterweight championship. Despite that, during the FS1 post-fight show, he shut down Stephen Thompson’s chances of a title shot, opting to call out Nick Diaz instead.
