Two UFC fighters make 'ESPN World Fame 100' list

Every year, ESPN publishes a list of the 100 most famous athletes in the world using a formula which compiles salary, endorsements, social media followings, and Google searches, and in turn produces a list of the 100 most famous athletes. For example, Soccer phenom Cristiano Ronaldo ranked #1 on the list, while NBA superstar LeBron James ranked #2 on the list. Surprisingly, two UFC stars ranked on the list. Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey ranked at #23, ahead of any other combat athlete. In addition, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor ranked at #37 on the list.

Conor McGregor bashes "dead" featherweight division

At UFC 194, Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo finally had their fight for the UFC featherweight championship. The fight lasted just 13 seconds, with McGregor putting the featherweight champion to sleep with a left hand in the first exchange of the fight. Rather than defending his belt, McGregor went up for what was supposed to be a lightweight title fight against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196. Unfortunately, dos Anjos withdrew from the fight with a broken foot. Nate Diaz then stepped in on short notice to fight McGregor, handing him the first loss of his UFC career.

At UFC 196 back in March, fight fans witnessed UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor lose for the first time in his MMA career. The seemingly invincible McGregor appeared unable to find his range, and ultimately ended up gassing in the 2nd round, resulting in Diaz landing a 1-2 combination that rocked McGregor, which led to a desperation takedown that quickly saw Diaz secure a rear naked choke, and win the fight.

Despite Chris Weidman withdrawing from his UFC 199 rematch with Luke Rockhold for the middleweight championship this Saturday, the trash-talk between the two has continued. After Rockhold said that Weidman fights like an idiot, Weidman fired back in a Tweet, in which he told Rockhold to keep his name out of his mouth and focus on Michael Bisping, who he referred to as ‘a gift’.

On Saturday, Chris Weidman was supposed to have a highly anticipated rematch with Luke Rockhold for the UFC middleweight championship in the main event of UFC 199. However, just two weeks ago, Weidman was forced out of the bout with a neck injury, and was replaced by Michael Bisping on short notice. Despite that, Weidman’s name has remained in headlines as a result of his heated feud with Rockhold. During a recent interview, Rockhold took shots at Weidman as he stated that the former champ fights like an idiot.
