Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn will return to the octagon on October 15, when he squares off with former UFC featherweight title challenger Ricardo Lamas in the main event of “UFC Fight Night Manila 2”. The UFC Hall of Fame fighter, Penn, has been on the sidelines for over two years now and has not won inside the octagon since his first-round KO victory over Matt Hughes at UFC 123 in November of 2010.

UFC 202’s main event featuring Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor will be talked about for a long time. The epic five-round battle saw both competitors find their moments of success but ultimately “The Notorious” walked out of the Octagon with the majority decision win in their second meeting. With the five-round battle, Diaz landed 252 of 435 total strikes thrown in the contest while McGregor landed 197 of 322, according to Fight Metric. With those numbers, Diaz established himself as Fight Metric’s UFC fighter that has the most total strikes landed in UFC history, moving past Frankie Edgar to take the number one spot.

St-Pierre, who has been on an indefinite hiatus since his 2013 split decision win over Johny Hendricks, reportedly was interested in fighting newly crowned UFC champion Tyron Woodley after his UFC 201 win over Robbie Lawler, however a matchup was never officially booked.

Going into UFC 202, where Conor McGregor hoped to avenge his UFC 196 loss to Nate Diaz, the featherweight champ and SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh did something they had never done before. They came up with a gameplan for Diaz. In addition to coming up with a gameplan, McGregor brought in several lanky southpaw boxers, and Jiu-Jitsu ace Dillon Danis to prepare for Diaz. In total, McGregor estimated that his training camp cost $300,000.

After Tyron Woodley defeated Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 to claim the UFC welterweight championship, he immediately called for a fight with St-Pierre, who seemed extremely willing to step back in the Octagon.

Going into Conor McGregor’s UFC 202 rematch with Nate Diaz, McGregor predicted that he would finish Diaz in the 4th round of their welterweight scrap. McGregor was unable to finish Diaz, however he dropped the Stockton fighter several times early on in the fight. Immediately following the fight, McGregor stated that he would do a trilogy fight with Diaz, however it would be at lightweight, where both men were more comfortable.
