A key middleweight bout between former UFC champion Vitor Belfort and surging contender Kelvin Gastelum served as the main event of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 fight card in Brazil. Round one begins and Vitor lands a good kick to the body early. Gastelum with the pressure early. He lands a nice jab but Vitor respond with a quick left of his own. Kelvin lands a nice combo but Vitor replies with a hard straight left. He lands another. Gastelum continues to press forward. Vitor attempts a flying knee that misses. Gastelum connects with a good jab that draws some blood from the nose of Belfort. Kelvin is pumping his jab here. Vitor partially connects with a spinning kick. Gastelum eats it and then connects with a punch of his own that drops Vitor. Kelvin follows him to the ground and unloads some ground and pound. Vitor scrambles and gets back to his feet. Belfort circles out and lands a nice right hand. Gastelum with a jab but Vitor scores with a right. Kelvin with another hard punch that drops Vitor. He lands a hammer fist and this one is over. Wow.

A light heavyweight bout between former division champion Mauricio Rua and Gian Villante served as the co-main event of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 fight card in Brazil. Round one begins and Villante throws a left jab to start. Shogun replies with a leg kick and then a right hand. Mauricio catches a kick and throws Gian to the ground. Villante gets up and lands a hard left hand. Shogun returns fire with a good right. That shot seemed to hurt Gian. He backs up but then comes forward and lands a huge left hook that stuns the Brazilian. Shogun attempts to clinch. Gian shakes him off. Shogun circles and then fires off a right. He lands another counter right and then a jab to the body. Both men are swinging for the fences now. Shogun right a combination. Villante answers with a jab. Shogun misses with a wild right hand. He connects with a right and then a left that drops Gian. Villante gets back up but Shogun tags him with another right. Gian backs up and circles away. Shogun presses forward and lands a body shot followed by a left upstairs. He throws a leg kick that connects. Gian responds with a jab o his own. Round one comes to an end as Shogun lands a combination.

A key lightweight tilt between Edson Barboza and Beneil Dariush took place during tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 main card in Brazil. Round one begins and Dariush throws a high kick that is blocked. The fighters trade low kicks. Dariush with a left hand. Both men landing kicks early. Barboza moving well. He fires a high kick that partially lands. Dariush is landing some good shots. Barboza fires back with a leg kick. He is moving well, but Dariush is chopping away with low kicks and punches. Barboza finally lands a big low kick. Dariush fires back with a big left. Round one comes to an end.

A key flyweight tilt between Ray Borg and Jussier Formiga took place during tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 card in Brazil. Round one begins and Borg starts out quickly with a combination. That fighters clinch up and both men exchange good knees inside before eventually breaking. Formiga with a hard leg kick. Borg presses forward and lands a left jab. Formiga retreats and then throws a low kick that connects with Borg’s groin. The referee steps in to let Ray recover. He does and we restart. Borg charges forward but misses with a left hand. The fighters clinch and Ray lands a good knee inside. Formiga presses him up against the cage. The fighters exchange knees. They break and Borg is able to connect with a hard uppercut. Formiga circles and Borg presses forward. Jussier connects with a beautiful counter right. Both men lands right hands now. Formiga with a nice combination to close out round one.

A welterweight clash between Tim Means and Alex Oliveira kicked off tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 main card in Brazil. Round one begins and Oliveira lands a body kick to start. Means presses forward but misses with a kick of his own. Tim chases after Alex and presses him against the cage. Oliveira turns off the cage and scores a trip. Means working from his back. Oliveira scores with an elbow. Means scrambles and gets to his feet. Oliveira jumps on the back and he lifts Means up and slams him to the floor. Means scrambles up, but Oliveira again drags him to the floor Means rolls and winds up in side control with a little less than 90 seconds left. Means with some short shots but nothing big. Round one comes to an end.

A lightweight scrap between Kevin Lee and Francisco Trinaldo served as the featured bout of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 prelims in Brazil. Round one begins and Lee opens up with a high kick which is blocked. Trinaldo replies with a left hand that connects. He presses forward and Lee dives in for a takedown attempt which is easily defended by the Brazilian. A good combination finds a home for Francisco. Lee pushes forward and shoots in and scores a takedown. He begins working from the full guard of Trinaldo. The Brazilian veteran is eventually able to scramble and get back to his feet along the fence. Lee with a good uppercut inside. They break and Trinaldo lands a huge left that rocks Lee who staggers backwards. Trinaldo chases after him but Lee is able to clinch up. They break and Lee lands a right jab but the Brazilian fires off another hard left. Trinaldo with a good shot to the body. Lee shoots in for a takedown but it is not there. Trinaldo with some shots from the top. Lee scrambles free. The fighters trade shots to end round one.

A welterweight scrap between Sergio Moraes and Davi Ramos took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 prelims in Brazil. Round one begins and Ramos quickly takes the center of the octagon. He leaps forward with a combination. Moraes fires back with a right hand. He leaps in with a knee that misses the mark. Sergio with a nice kick to the body but Ramos is quick to counter with a right hand. Davi with the forward pressure now. He lunges forward with a knee that misses the mark. Moraes circles and lands a jab to the body. Ramos fires off a combination but those shots are blocked by Sergio. Moraes misses with a high kick attempt. Ramos fires back with a hard low kick. He lands another and then presses forward with a right. Moraes counters nicely with a left hand and then a kick to the body. One minute remains in round one. Both men are pawing with their jabs now. Ramos misses with an overhand right. Moraes attempts but misses with one of his own. Davi circles back after eating a combo from Moraes. He charges forward with a right that is blocked and round one comes to an end.

A bantamweight scrap between Joe Soto and Rani Yahya took place during tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 prelims in Brazil. Round one begins and Yahya charges forward with a high kick and then a flurry of punches. Soto blocks most of the strikes but Rani partially catches him with another high kick. Joe circles out and then blasts Yahya with a right hand that floors him. Rani immediately pops back up but eats a left hand from Soto. Yahya with a good left hand of his own. Soto shakes it off and presses forward. Rani with a good kick to the body but Joe counters that with a right hand. Yahya retreats but then lunges forward with a combination. Rani follows that up with a takedown attempt but it is not there. Joe is using a lot of forward pressure here but is having trouble finding his range. Rani leaps in with a combo. He gets Soto to the floor. Joe wraps up a guillotine choke but Yahya quickly escapes the hold. Rani working from half guard now. Round one comes to an end.

A featherweight scrap between Rony Jason and Jeremy Kennedy served as the featured bout of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 Fight Pass prelims in Brazil. Round one begins and Jason comes forward with a leaping right hand. Kennedy goes upstairs with a head kick which is partially blocked. Kennedy circles and pops a nice jab. Jason charges forward but Jeremy avoids him and then connects with a leg kick. Rony comes forward and lands a nice jab to the body. He continues to press forward and lands a right hand. More pressure from Rony and he lands a flying knee. The strike knocks Kennedy to the floor but he seems to be ok. Jeremy quickly works his way back up and then presses Jason against the fence. Kennedy scores with a takedown. He lands some ground and pound before Jason returns to his feet. The stand-up is short-lived as Kennedy drags Jason back to the canvas. Good shots from the top by Jeremy. Jason scrambles and gets back up but Kennedy immediately brings him back to the floor. Kennedy with a nasty elbow from the top. He works some short shots and then a couple of hard elbows. Round one comes to an end.

A middleweight tilt between Paulo Borrachinha and Garreth McLellan kicked off tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 event in Fortaleza, Brazil. Round one begins and Borrachinha starts off quickly landing a nice right hand. He is pressuring McLellan early here. Paulo with a nice combination. He backs Garreth up against the cage. McLellan clinches up and throws a couple of knees. Paulo is relentless however and continues to throw big punches. He catches Garreth with another big right hand. McLellan goes down and Paul is quick to follow him to the ground. Big shots from the top by Paulo. The referee mercifully steps in and stops the fight.

Back in December, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes set foot in the Octagon to fight former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in a highly anticipated showdown. Leading up to the fight, Rousy was the focus of the promos, drawing quite a bit of controversy given the fact that Nunes was the champion going into the fight. When the pair stepped in the Octagon, it took just 47 seconds for Nunes to stop the former champ via strikes, ending the long awaited ‘Ronda Rousey return’ following Rousey being knocked out by Holly Holm back in 2015.

The Ultimate Fighter season 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum is currently competing at middleweight following several botched weight-cuts to welterweight. Gastelum won season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter in the middleweight division, but then dropped to welterweight in order to fight opponents his size. With that being said, Gastelum missed weight on several occasions, resulting in UFC President Dana White banning him from cutting to welterweight, and forcing him to move up to the middleweight division. Gastelum made his first appearance at middleweight at UFC 206 in December, where he stepped into the Octagon against returning middleweight star Tim Kennedy for a highly anticipated, and very pivotal, middleweight showdown. Gastelum won the fight via 3rd round TKO, cementing his place at #10 on the UFC’s official middleweight division. He then signed to fight UFC veteran Vitor Belfort in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: 106’ this Saturday, where he has the opportunity to cement his place at the top of the UFC’s middleweight division with a potential win over a MMA legend.

At UFC 207, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey made her highly anticipated return to the Octagon for a showdown with UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. Throughout the buildup of the fight, Rousey was the focus of the promos leading up to the fight, stirring quite a bit of controversy given that Nunes, the champion, was not receiving the same promo as Rousey was. Following her dominant win over Rousey, Nunes used her post-fight press conference to bash the former champ, saying:

Throughout the course of developments made in the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather superfight negotiations, undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather has remained adamant the fact that he is truly retired from boxing. With news surfacing earlier this year from the NSAC that both parties have been making progress in negotiations, many believed a fight was all, but official. Mayweather and UFC President Dana White both then revealed that the fight was not close to being finalized. Mayweather released a statement in which he stated that he was truly retired and would keep fans updated if the status of his retirement changed.

This past weekend at UFC 209, ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Nations’ veteran Dan Kelly picked up an impressive unanimous decision win over Rashad Evans as he outstruck the former light heavyweight champ while taking ‘Suga’ down several times throughout the fight. Despite the win being a massive one for Kelly, he has yet to crack into the middleweight division’s top 15. With that being said, the win was certainly the biggest of the Olympic Judoka’s MMA career.
