On August 26, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will battle the undefeated Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. For all the Irishman’s talent as a mixed martial artist, he is not believed to have much of a chance in this bout, given the gulf of boxing experience between himself and Mayweather. Yet according to Mike Winkeljohn, who serves as the striking coach at Jackson’s MMA, arguably the best camp in MMA, McGregor has a chance.

To promote this fight, the two stars recently engaged in a four-city press tour, stopping in LA, Toronto, Brooklyn and London. As expected, this tour generated hundreds of headlines. Unfortunately, not all of them were positive, as Mayweather dropped a homophobic slur in London, and McGregor caught flack for comments that seemed to have a racist undertone.
Former featherweight champ Germaine de Randamie booked for bantamweight return

Germaine de Randamie (8-3), who became the UFC’s first-ever women’s featherweight champion earlier this year, is officially returning to bantamweight. The former champ has been booked for a scrap with Marion Reneau (7-3-1), which will go down on September 2 in Rotterdam, in de Randamie’s home country of The Netherlands. This matchup was announced by the UFC.

Last July, in the co-main event of the stacked UFC 200, former UFC heavyweight champion and long-time WWE star Brock Lesnar made a return to the Octagon after a hiatus of many years. He did so against Mark Hunt for a substantial $2.5 million payday. Lesnar would win this fight, relying on his wrestling to capture a dominant unanimous decision win. Unfortunately, he tested positive for the banned substance clomiphene shortly thereafter, and his win over Hunt was overturned.

The UFC rankings have been updated following the UFC Fight Night 113 event that took place over the weekend. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ suspension is now up and has been placed back on the rankings as the #1 light heavyweight contender. Jones is set to face champion Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 214. Jones also was placed at #7 on the pound-for-pound rankings.

The event also saw Galore Bafondo pick up arguably one of the most devastating KOs of the year as he tossed Charlie Ward to the canvas from the clinch, knocking him out cold using the canvas.

Tickets for the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor fight have not been released to the general public yet but will surely sell out quickly when they go on sale on July 24. Prices range from a limited amount of $500 seats up to $10,000 seats, according to what Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe stated during the world tour last week.

UFC middleweight Kelvin Gastelum has been on a tear recently. After dropping a split decision to Neil Magny at the TUF Latin America 2 Finale, Gastelum bounced back by picking up a unanimous decision win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 200. Following that, Gastelum returned to middleweight and picked up a 3rd round TKO win over Tim Kennedy in what would end up being Kennedy’s final fight. Most recently, Gastelum picked up a dominant 1st round KO win over Vitor Belfort at ‘UFC Fight Night: Fortaleza’, extending his win streak to three, however the win was overturned to a no contest after Gastelum tested positive for marijuana. It was that same drug testing failure that also resulted in Gastelum being pulled from his scheduled scrap with Anderson Silva.

Last month, veteran UFC referee Mario Yamasaki caught heat for a rather controversial stoppage he made during the UFC Fight Night 112 main event scrap between Michael Chiesa and Kevin Lee. With Chiesa trapped in a rear naked choke with no escape in sight, ‘The Maverick’ stopped hand fighting the choke, and momentarily appeared to go limp, at which point Yamasaki promptly stopped the fight. Immediately, Chiesa popped up to protest the stoppage, however the fight was already over. The stoppage was an extremely controversial one in the eyes of many because despite Chiesa momentarily stopping his hand fighting, he never verbally, or physically, tapped out.
