Jimi Manuwa issues statement after quick KO loss to Volkan Oezdemir

Tom Taylor - July 30, 2017

On Saturday night, in the first bout of the stacked UFC 214 main card, British knockout artist Jimi Manuwa stepped onto the canvas with rapidly rising Swiss contender Volkan Oezdemir. The winner of this fight, it seemed, would become the next man in line for the winner of Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones light heavyweight championship main event. While Manuwa entered this fight as a notable betting favorite, things really couldn’t have gone much worse for him. After tying Oezdemir up against the cage, he ate a handful of clubbing uppercuts, and was sent stumbling across the cage by a left hand. A few followup punches later, and he was out like a light. It was a breakthrough win for Oezdemir, and a disaster for Manuwa.

After KO of Manuwa, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson praises Volkan Oezdemir: he made me look bad

Last night, in the first bout of the stacked UFC 214 main card, Switzerland’s Volkan Oezdemir stepped onto the canvas with British knockout artist Jimi Manuwa in perceived light heavyweight number-one-contender fight. Though Oezdemir entered this fight as noteworthy underdog, he passed his test with flying colors, mauling his accomplished foe to a first-round knockout victory. Because this bout was just Oezdemir’s third in the UFC, his emphatic defeat of Manuwa might have come as a bit of a surprise to many members of the MMA community. Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Johnson, however, was not surprised at all. Having spent the last few weeks training with Oezdemir at Combat Club in Lantana, Florida, he is well aware of what the Swiss bomber is capable of.

Cris Cyborg sets her sights on Holly Holm, Dana White comments on possible fight

Cris Cyborg is finally a UFC champion. After years of waiting, the Brazilian bomber got her chance to fight for the vacant UFC women’s featherweight title opposite Tonya Evinger in one of three title fights on Saturday’s UFC 214 bill. Cyborg won her title with a third-round TKO. From here, it’s difficult to say what might be next for Cyborg, as the UFC women’s featherweight division is notoriously short on talent. While Megan Anderson – Cyborg’s originally planned UFC 214 opponent – seems like an option, however, Cyborg herself is interested in a scrap with former women’s bantamweight champ Holly Holm.
