Coach Javier Mendez issues statement on Daniel Cormier's UFC 214 loss to Jon Jones

Last night, in the main event of the stacked UFC 214, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier attempted to defend his title against his fiercest rival and the only man he’s lost to, Jon Jones. Unfortunately for Cormier and his fans, however, he came up short, as he was put down by a Jones head kick in the third round. Though Cormier has not yet spoken up in the wake of this loss, his head-coach at American Kickboxing Academy, Javier Mendez, has. Mendez took to Instagram with a heartfelt post addressing Cormier’s knockout loss to Jones. See this post below.

Last night, in the main event of the absolutely stacked UFC 214, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones finally stepped into the cage for their long-awaited rematch. Though Cormier started strong – arguably winning the early portions of the fight – he was cracked in the third by a monstrous Jones head-kick. A few followup ground strikes later and the deed was done. Daniel Cormier had lost by third-round knockout, and the light heavyweight title was once again around Jon Jones’ waist. In the moments after this emphatic stoppage, Jones celebrated with his team and family, while an emotional Cormier struggled to keep his footing, stumbling around the Octagon and shining a spotlight on the ugly, brain-rattling undertone of the sport we all love so much. Last night, in the co-main event of the stacked UFC 214, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley attempted his third title defense against Brazilian jiu jitsu wizard Demian Maia. Though the fight was an undeniably slow one, Woodley successfully defended his welterweight crown, stopping all 21 of Maia’s attempted takedowns en route to a unanimous decision win. After two very closely contested rounds with “DC”, Jones was able to land a beautiful head kick in round three which left Cormier on wobbly legs and in all sorts of trouble. From there, “Bones” would get Cormier to the ground where he unleashed some brutal ground and pound which forced the referee to step in and call the contest.

Jones would immediately rush after “DC” and get him to the octagon canvas where he proceeded to unleash some brutal ground and pound which forced the referee to step in and call a stop to the action.

According to White, the UFC’s decision to book Bisping vs. St-Pierre came while watching round five of the UFC 214 co-main event scrap between Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia.

A light heavyweight title fight rematch between current champ Daniel Cormier and former title holder Jon Jones served as the main event of tonight’s UFC 214 fight card in Anaheim, California. Round one begins and Jones lands a hard low kick. He lands a right hand and then a left. Jones starting off quickly. Cormier lands a massive uppercut that knocks the mouth guard out of Jon Jones. The referee hands it to him. Jones lands a takedown but Cormier scrambles and they are back up. Jones with a left hand. Cormier replies with one of his own. Jones with a nice shot to the body. He lands a kick to the thigh. Cormier presses forward. Jones fakes a kick. He throws a low kick. He lands a left and then throws Cormier in to the fence. Another good jab and then a low kick from Jones. He lands a hard knee to the mid section. DC comes forward and lands a pair of low kicks. He follows that up with a right hand. Jones replies with a low kick of his own. Cormier circles and returns fire. Jones with a good kick to the body. He follows that up with an elbow. Jones with a nice right hand over the top. Jones with a left hand and then a front kick. DC replies with a low kick. Jones comes over the top with an elbow. DC misses with a wild right but then lands a low kick. Jones fires back with a low kick of his own. DC with a nice left hand. He presses forward and lands a right. Jones fires back with a pair of left hands. DC comes forward and lands a pair of big punches. Jones showboats but then eats a right hand. Cormier with some low kicks and then one to the body. Jones returns fire with a low kick. Round one comes to an end.

A women’s featherweight title fight took place on tonight’s UFC 214 main card as top contender Cris Cyborg took on Tonya Evinger for the promotions vacant title. Round one begins and Cyborg presses forward and throws a left. Another left from Justino appears to rock Evinger. Cyborg rushes in with a combination. Evinger eats the blows and pulls guard. Cyborg stands up and motions Evinger to do the same. Cyborg immediately presses forward. She lands a couple of right hands and then a knee. Evinger circles out. Cyborg catches her with a hard low kick. Cristiane presses forward. Evinger ducks under a strike and shoots in for a takedown. She presses Cyborg against the fence. She scores the takedown but Cris is back up. Evinger still stays on her and scores a nice trip takedown. Cris shoots back up to her feet and lands a hard knee. Evinger circles out. She appears to accidently poke Cyborg in the eye. We break as the referee gives Cris time to recover. We restart after a long break and Cyborg quickly presses forward with an inside leg kick. Tonya fires a leg kick off of her own. They fighters clinch a Cris lands a knee. Evinger attempts to press the fight against the cage. Cris misses with a takedown. Tonya circles off the fence. Cyborg with a combination. She lands a knee and then another set of shots. Tonya circles out but eats another right hand. Cris with a follow up knee and the horn sounds to end round one.

A key welterweight scrap between former division champion Robbie Lawler and perennial contender Donald Cerrone took place during tonight’s UFC 214 main card from Anaheim, California. Round one begins and Lawler comes out flying he lands a big left followed by a bunch of knees. Big shots from Lawler. He lands a right hand. Cerrone retreats. Lawler steps in and engages Donald in the clinch. Cerrone lands a good knee. Lawler presses Donald against the fence. He lands a some big shots. Uppercuts now from Laweler. Cerrone with a nice elbow. Lawler fires back with some left hands. Both me exchange knees in the clinch. They break and Lawler presses forward. Once again the clinch. Robbie presses Donald against the cage. He lands some shot but Cerrone shakes free. Donald with a high kick. It’s blocked and Lawler lands a huge knee. He goes for a left it is not there. Another kick from Lawler. Cerrone appears to be hurt. He shoots in and scores a takedown. Cerrone eventually moves to half guard. Cerrone moves to side control and then takes north south position. One minute remains. Cerrone works in some knees. Lawler scrambles and gets back to his feet. Cerrone connects with a punch. Lawler fires off a kick to the body. Cerrone goes high and rocks Lawler with a kick. Lawler circles out and the horn sounds to end round one.
