Miesha Tate on Possible Cris “Cyborg” Super Fight: I Wouldn’t Be Against It

By Tom Taylor - October 10, 2016

Reigning Invicta featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino has now fought twice in the UFC. On both occasions, she took on beefed-up bantamweights at a catchweight of 140lbs, and on both occasions, she absolutely mauled that opposition.

Given Cyborg’s size and ferocity, it’s bound to get more and more difficult for the UFC to find her willing dance partners. There is one bantamweight on the UFC roster, however, that appears to be up for the challenge: Miesha Tate.

Though Tate’s focus is currently fixed on a UFC 205 bout with Raquel Pennington, she explained on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour that she wouldn’t be opposed to a showdown with Cyborg sometime down the road. She hasn’t, however, been offered the fight as of yet.

“When I was the champ, the UFC was like ‘we’re not gonna do a catchweight [with Cyborg], so either she has to meet you at 135, or you have to not be the champion,'” Tate explained. “But I suppose now that I’m not the champion, I could technically fight her at 140. I wouldn’t be against it.”

The appeal of a bout with Cyborg, Tate explained, is that she has nothing to lose by accepting it.

“[I’d be] fighting a girl that’s such a powerhouse, such a beast, and just crushing girls, that if I went in there and beat her, or even gave her a solid run for her money, it says a lot,” Tate explained. “I wouldn’t be opposed to doing it, but it’s not something that’s been discussed, and obviously at this point, I’ve gotta focus on Raquel [Pennington].”

Tate did, however, joke that if she’s going to fight a monster like Cyborg, she’ll need to be fairly compensated to counteract the inherent health risks.

“It might take a couple years of my life,” she said with a laugh.
