Conor McGregor is a free man. During a Thursday court appearance, the Irish MMA star was cleared of all felony charges, and handed a few minor punishments for his infamous April rampage in Brooklyn. This means is that McGregor will soon be able to return to the Octagon, should he so choose. If McGregor does return to the cage, it’s more than likely that it will be to a title fight with undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Both UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former champ Conor McGregor were in attendance at Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Final in Russia. Given that the pair have repeatedly been linked to a blockbuster title fight, and that there is a long history of heated confrontations between them, many fans were hoping they’d cross paths. After all, what better way to expedite fight negotiations than a little skirmish? In the end, however, Nurmagomedov and McGregor did not meet in Russia. And according to Khabib Nurmagomedov, that was probably for the best. Though the Russian star expected to see the Irishman in the stadium, he doesn’t feel a meeting under those circumstances would be fruitful.

Late last week, a report out of Russia suggested that a lightweight title fight between undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former two-division champ Conor McGregor could headline UFC 229, this October 6 in Las Vegas. Over the weekend, McGregor’s striking coach Owen Roddy was asked about this possibility. While he assured he couldn’t confirm anything outright, he did say McGregor is training hard, and that the fight with Nurmagomedov is “brewing up nicely.”

Of all the options available, however, none would be bigger or more lucrative than a fight between Nurmagomedov and former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor. In the opinion of UFC President Dana White, this is absolutely the fight to make. Unfortunately, McGregor is presently neck-deep in a complicated legal situation, which stems from his infamous rampage in Brooklyn — you know, the one where he threw a dolly through the window of a shuttle bus carrying Nurmagomedov and a number of other UFC 223 fighters. So, while White hopes to book a McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov fight, he says he’ll first have to see how McGregor’s legal situation shakes out, starting with his June 15 court date in New York City.
