UFC stars express interest in boxing vs. MMA pay-per-view

Tom Taylor - March 27, 2017

The biggest ongoing story in combat sports today surrounds a possible boxing mega-fight between transcendent MMA star Conor McGregor and boxing great Floyd Mayweather. For a time, of course, this potential showdown looked like a near impossibility. With each passing day, however, there seems to be more and more reason to believe a Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match could actually happen. Were Mayweather and McGregor to meet in the boxing ring, it could safely be referred to as the biggest fight in combat sports history. Given this, it would also go down as one of the most lucrative fights – if not the most lucrative fight – in the history of fighting sports.

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is currently booked to fight top ranked middleweight Kelvin Gastelum in a highly anticipated middleweight showdown on June 3rd at UFC 212. While the scrap will certainly be a very interesting one, one aspect that fight fans haven’t been anticipating is the fact that Kings MMA coach Rafael Cordeiro, who trains Kelvin Gastelum, used to train Anderson Silva at the Chute Boxe Academy in the early 2000’s.

Tom Taylor - March 12, 2017

At a to-be-determined date later this year, former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will return from a hiatus of several years to a shot at middleweight champion Michael Bisping. While news of this St-Pierre comeback was exciting for many fans, however, it was a bit of a buzzkill for the many hard-working contenders in the middleweight division – contenders like Kelvin Gastelum, who surged into title contention with a first-round knockout of Vitor Belfort in Brazil last night. Shortly after his defeat of Belfort, Gastelum weighed in on St-Pierre’s line-jumping middleweight title fight, expressing his opinion that it tarnishes the legitimacy of divisional rankings and contendership.

Kelvin Gastelum still eyeing potential return to welterweight

bjpenndotcom - March 11, 2017

The Ultimate Fighter season 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum is currently competing at middleweight following several botched weight-cuts to welterweight. Gastelum won season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter in the middleweight division, but then dropped to welterweight in order to fight opponents his size. With that being said, Gastelum missed weight on several occasions, resulting in UFC President Dana White banning him from cutting to welterweight, and forcing him to move up to the middleweight division. Gastelum made his first appearance at middleweight at UFC 206 in December, where he stepped into the Octagon against returning middleweight star Tim Kennedy for a highly anticipated, and very pivotal, middleweight showdown. Gastelum won the fight via 3rd round TKO, cementing his place at #10 on the UFC’s official middleweight division. He then signed to fight UFC veteran Vitor Belfort in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: 106’ this Saturday, where he has the opportunity to cement his place at the top of the UFC’s middleweight division with a potential win over a MMA legend.

Kelvin Gastelum bothered by criticism from failed weigh cuts

bjpenndotcom - January 24, 2017

While TUF season 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum is certainly a top 10 fighter in both the welterweight and middleweight divisions, Gastelum has received quite a bit of criticism for missing weight on numerous occasions when making the cut to 170 to fight at welterweight. Kelvin Gastelum’s first run-in with the scale came at UFC Fight Night 44 in 2014, where he missed weight by almost 2 pounds before his fight with Nico Musoke. Following that, Gastelum has another run-in with the scale in 2015, when he missed weight by ten pounds ahead of his UFC 183 scrap with Tyron Woodley, where he lost a split decision. Most recently, Gastelum was forced out of his UFC 205 scrap with Donald Cerrone when he actually skipped attempting to formally make weight as he was aware that he was well over the welterweight non-title fight limit of 171 pounds.

"Motivated and happy" Vitor Belfort looking forward to Kelvin Gastelum fight

bjpenndotcom - January 21, 2017

Despite being on a 2-fight skid that has seen him drop back to back TKO losses, MMA legend Vitor Belfort remains a top 10 ranked middleweight on the UFC’s official roster. After going 0-2 over the course of 2016, reports surfaced that Belfort was going to retire following his UFC 204 loss to Gegard Mousasi, however he then announced that he wasn’t retiring, he was merely looking to return to the Octagon as ‘The Phenom’ and return to the win column in 2017.

Kelvin Gastelum says he'd stay at middleweight for a fight with Vitor Belfort

Tom Taylor - December 11, 2016

Last month, the UFC made its long-awaited debut in New York with UFC 205. To celebrate the occasion, the organization stacked the card with high profile fights. One of the most exciting of these scheduled fights was one between Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Kelvin Gastelum, which was to occur at welterweight. When Gastelum was so over weight for the bout that he didn’t even bother stepping on the scale to weigh in, however, it was scrapped and removed from the card.

Dana White on Gastelum's Weigh-In Miss: I'll Never Let Him Fight at 170 Again

Tom Taylor - November 11, 2016

Earlier this morning, UFC 205‘s stacked main card took a significant hit when welterweight contender Kelvin Gastelum failed to make weight for his planned bout with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Though weigh-in misses do not typically result in the cancelation of a fight outright, Gastelum’s was severe enough that it forced him off the card altogether, leaving Cowboy without an opponent, and depriving fans of a highly anticipated fight. This weight related slip up is unfortunately not Gastelum’s first. In his eight scheduled welterweight bouts with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the 25-year-old has missed weight 3 times, first for a 2014 bout with Nico Musoke, then for a 2015 bout with Tyron Woodley and most recently for this nixed bout with Cowboy. He also very nearly missed weight for a mid-2016 bout with Johny Hendricks.

The second will pair welterweight champ Tyron Woodley, fresh off a first-round KO of Robbie Lawler, with streaking challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The third will see dominant strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk attempt to defend her title for a fourth time against fellow undefeated Polish fighter Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
