For a time, Joanna Jedrzejczyk looked truly unstoppable as the UFC strawweight champion. Then, in November of 2017, her reign came to a shocking and violent end, as she was put down by a salvo of first-round Rose Namajunas punches.
Given her previous dominance, Jedrzejczyk was given the chance to reclaim her title from Namajunas in an immediate rematch in April. In the end, however, she fell to 0-2 against the new champion, giving up a close but fair unanimous decision.
Today, Namajunas is looking ahead to other challenges as the UFC strawweight champion, while Jedrzejczyk will look to get back on track opposite Tecia Torres this summer. That being said, it seems very possible that the two strawweight stars meet in a trilogy fight sometime down the road. In Namajunas’s eyes, however, Jedrzejczyk needs to prove she deserves that chance first, ideally with a few more wins
“Right now, that fight doesn’t really interest me at the moment,” Namajunas recently told TMZ Sports (transcribed by Jed Meshew for MMA Fighting). “I think I’d be interested to see how she does with somebody else before even entertaining that possibility. At the moment, there’s not much to gain from running that back again.”
While Namajunas isn’t interested in an immediate trilogy fight with the former champ Jedrzejczyk, she would entertain the idea if one interesting condition is met. This condition seems to be based on Jedrzejczyk’s previous reluctance to acknowledge Namajunas the best in the world.
“Unless she’s says I’m the best – publicly!” said Namajunas. “Publicly because I already know she knows. You gotta say it to everybody! She knows I’m the best but she won’t admit it to everybody.”
Do you think we’ll ever see a third fight between Rose Namajunas and Joanna Jedrzejczyk? Who do you think would come out on top?
