Jeff Monson wants Gordon Ryan superfight

Jeff Monson would like a grappling super fight against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu superstar, Gordon Ryan.

Monson is one of the most highly-decorated grapplers in MMA.

His credentials include being a 2x ADCC world champion, a former heavyweight title contender in the UFC and a veteran of multiple other high-profile promotions including PRIDE, Strikeforce, M-1 Global and Cage Warriors.

Speaking to BJPenn.com he said,

‘Gordon Ryan has changed the game. He’s doing stuff that nobody did before with leg submissions, everything. Just his whole entire game is brand new. I’m quite impressed with what he’s done. And for that reason and that reason only, I would love a match with him. So that’s what I’m trying to set up now. I’m training and looking to find a promotion that would put that together.’

Now 49, Monson is very much in the twilight of his career but believes a match with Ryan would be a fun prospect for the fans as it would represent ‘old school vs new school.’

Ryan is undoubtedly the biggest grappling star in the world right now and has no shortage of suitors.

He’s also no stranger to taking on heavyweights from the world of MMA, having submitted the likes of Aleksei Oleinik and Josh Barnett in recent years, and Monson hopes that the 25-year-old will be open to facing him.

‘Another thing I respect about him is that he doesn’t shy away from any challenges. He fought the best of the best and he’s not going to shy down from anyone. I think it’s just two things: a promotion putting it together and him getting the compensation that I think he would deserve for something like that.’
