Conor McGregor rips Georges St-Pierre, offers advice to MMAAA

In 2016, former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, and top ranked fighters Donald Cerrone & Tim Kennedy announced the formation of the MMA Athletes Association, also known as the MMAAA, aimed at UFC fighters unionizing in an effort to receive more pay from the UFC. Interestingly enough, during the press conference for the announcement of the MMAAA, Georges St-Pierre made a plea to UFC superstar Conor McGregor to join the MMAAA, saying:

Earlier this month, former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre joined several other high-profile fighters such as Cain Velasquez, TJ Dillashaw, Donald Cerrone, and Tim Kennedy in announcing the formation of the MMA Athletes Association. The association was the first of its kind, and while the MMA Fighters Association was announced earlier this year, the MMAAA featured marquee fighters such as St-Pierre & Velasquez, and was geared towards helping UFC fighters.

Georges St-Pierre has been trying to negotiate for another fight in the UFC after not competing in mixed martial arts for over three years. The former kingpin of the UFC welterweight division who hails from Canada was in talks with the UFC to fight at UFC 206, which was in Toronto but both sides failed to come to an agreement. St-Pierre and his lawyer have stated since the failed negotiations, the former UFC champion was a free agent but nothing has resulted in the claimed free agency as of yet.

When St-Pierre initially stepped away from the sport in 2013 following a split decision win over Johny Hendricks, ‘Rush’ began to speak out about PEDs in MMA, calling for a clean sport if there was any chance of him returning. The move was certainly a historic one, and left a major immediate impact on the MMA community, as countless fighters took to social media to praise the fighters for the move, and express an interest in joining the MMAAA. Former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre, who is arguably the most high-profile fighter on the panel of fighters, explained that at the present time, fighters receive about 8% of what the UFC makes, while in most sports athletes make nearly 50%.

Former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre had been rumored for quite some time to be ending his indefinite hiatus from the Octagon, and returning to the UFC at UFC 206 in Toronto on December 10th. According to the reports that continued to surface, St-Pierre would be ending his hiatus and returning to the Octagon for the card to fight UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping in the main event. Unfortunately, negotiations between St-Pierre and the UFC brass failed, and St-Pierre was forced to release a statement to Bisping, saying:

Several weeks ago, all signs pointed to former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre returning to the Octagon at UFC 206 to fight UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping for the middleweight title at UFC 206 in Toronto, Canada. Unfortunately, while both men verbally agreed to the fight, there were several hangups on the matchup, with St-Pierre’s deal with Under Armour being one notable conflict of interest given the UFC’s partnership with Reebok.

Several weeks ago, it appeared as though UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping could very well find himself stepping into the Octagon in December at UFC 206 to fight former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre. While the fight appeared to be all but official, St-Pierre released a message to Bisping via social media in which he informed ‘The Count’ that while he hoped to return to the Octagon at the event, negotiations with the UFC didn’t go well, and he won’t be able to fight at the highly anticipated Toronto event. Bisping, understandably bummed out over the news, released a statement in which he informed fans that he has his heart set on fighting at UFC 206, and would be willing to fight anyone, preferably Nick Diaz.

This resulted in St-Pierre revealing in an interview that he had terminated his contract with the UFC after the promotion failed to secure him a fight in a reasonable amount of time. Unfortunately however, while St-Pierre was hoping to deliver on his promise of news of his return, shortly after ‘Rush’ gave the interview he then revealed in a separate interview that he had terminated his contract with the UFC, and was now a free agent. Despite that, St-Pierre remained in Las Vegas, with many speculating that St-Pierre remained in Vegas to negotiate with the UFC brass.

With a 15-0 professional record that has seen Askren not only claim the ONE championship, but also win the Bellator welterweight championship. As if that weren’t enough, Askren defended his ONE FC championship once, and also defended his Bellator championship belt 4 times. Despite that, the accomplished wrestler has never competed under the UFC banner, which has brought him quite a bit of criticism when fans discuss the top welterweights in MMA.

Georges St-Pierre may be in for the biggest fight of his life and it won’t even be close to taking place in the Octagon. On Monday, the former UFC welterweight kingpin announced on The MMA Hour that he was a free agent after his legal team terminated his contract with the UFC. Later that day, the UFC released a statement saying that St-Pierre was in fact still under contract with them.
