While there are certainly many problems with the way weight cuts in MMA are carried out, many fans feel the primary issue is the early UFC weigh ins. As it turns out, UFC President Dana White feels the same way, and plans to abolish these early weigh ins.

Dana White on Leslie Smith's labor complaint against the UFC: "That's not my problem"
Tom Taylor - May 10, 2018
If things had gone according to the initial plan, Leslie Smith would have fought Aspen Ladd on the undercard of April’s UFC Atlantic City card. Regrettably, things took an incredibly ugly turn at the last minute, and the end result was Smith’s release from the UFC. The trouble began when Ladd missed weight for the fight, tipping the scales 1.8 pounds over the bantamweight limit. Despite this hiccup, Smith was willing to take the fight, but she wanted to hash out a new deal with the UFC first, as her bout with Ladd marked the last obligation on her current contract. Unfortunately, the UFC instead opted to buy out Smith’s contract, paying the bantamweight her show and win money, and ending her UFC career on the spot…

Earlier this month, in the co-main event of UFC 223, Jedrzejczyk failed to reclaim that title, giving up a close decision to Namajunas in the pair’s anticipated rematch. While the judges awarded the decision to Namajunas in this rematch, however, Jedrzejczyk has repeatedly stated that she feels the fight should have been scored in her favor. Her main argument to this end is that she technically landed more strikes than her foe.

The interim lightweight champ really has been forced out of the fight with a leg injury—a leg injury he sustained while he was walking, if you can believe that. The good news is that we get a solid consolation prize. Nurmagomedov will still fight on the card, taking on a beefed up version of UFC featherweight champ Max Holloway, who steps up on just six days notice. The two will battle for the undisputed lightweight title.
