Former UFC star blames Dana White for post-UFC 321 fan turn against Tom Aspinall

Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub believes Tom Aspinall’s now-checkered relationship with fans can be attributed to Dana White.

Undisputed UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall’s first title defense ended disastrously as his fight with Ciryl Gane was ruled a no-contest at UFC 321 last year. After suffering from several eye pokes deemed accidental, Aspinall was unable to continue fighting, and the fight was abruptly stopped just minutes into the bout.

Since fight night, Aspinall continues to suffer from vision issues, and a timeframe for his return is uncertain. UFC CEO Dana White raised eyebrows after UFC 321 when he claimed Aspinall ‘didn’t want to continue’ against Gane, which many perceived as a jab at Aspinall’s toughness.

In response, Aspinall has admitted he ‘hates the business aspect’ of MMA and said he was perplexed by White’s comments. Brendan Schaub, who has had his own up-and-down relationship with White over the years, came to Aspinall’s defense.

In a recent episode of The Schaub Show, Schaub shared a unique perspective on White’s comments since Aspinall’s no-contest at UFC 321.

“You know how dumb you have to be? You’re talking about the guy who grew up in a jiu-jitsu dojo, who’s dedicated his entire life, who is the baddest man walking the planet. He would be faking all this for what?” Schaub said of White’s remarks about Aspinall.

“Because of Ciryl Gane? No one’s scared of Ciryl Gane. It’s a great matchup for Tom. What the f— are you talking about? That’s why the fights are five rounds, dumba–. I don’t get it. It’s heartbreaking. What makes Dana great is he shoots from the hip, and he’s not so politically correct.

“He just says what he says. Right after the fight, you could see how Dana can say that,” Schaub continued on White. “But the issue with that is now that gives energy, and that gives perspective, so the rest of the UFC trolls jump on that, and now it just ignites the fire on top.”
