Dana White fires back at Cris Cyborg following news of Holm vs. de Randamie

Scott Hernandez - December 14, 2016

This week, the UFC announced that former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm, and #11 ranked women’s bantamweight Germaine de Randamie would be fighting for the inaugural women’s featherweight championship at UFC 208 on February 11th. That didn’t sit too well with Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, who is now 2-0 in the UFC after making her successful UFC debut earlier this year. According to UFC President Dana White, Cyborg turned down two fights for the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight championship, forcing the promotion to opt to give the title fight to Holm & Randamie.

Cris Cyborg explains why she turned down two UFC featherweight title fights

Scott Hernandez - December 6, 2016

Since Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg made her successful UFC debut back in May at UFC 198, the arguable pound for pound women’s champ has been campaigning for the UFC to create a women’s featherweight division. With that being said, many fight fans were shocked to learn this week that when the UFC actually offered Cyborg two women’s UFC featherweight title fights, Cyborg turned both down. UFC President Dana White explained that Cyborg informed he and UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby that she would be unable to make the 145 pound featherweight limit on eight weeks notice due to the difficult weight cut she endured several months ago when cutting to make the catchweight limit of 140 pounds for her ‘UFC Fight Night: Sao Paulo’ headlining scrap with Lina Lansberg.

Dana White reveals UFC offered Cris Cyborg two title fights at 145 pounds

Scott Hernandez - December 6, 2016

In 2016, Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg successfully made her UFC debut earlier this year when she successfully defeated Leslie Smith at UFC 198 back in May. Given that Cyborg competes in the women’s featherweight division under the Invicta banner, her fight with Smith was a catchweight fight of 140 pounds. In her second Octagon appearance, Cyborg defeated Swedish striker Lina Lansberg via TKO in the second round of their ‘UFC Fight Night: Sao Paulo’ main event scrap. Despite that, it’s been well documented that Cyborg struggles to make the catchweight limit of 140 pounds. Leading up to both of her scheduled UFC scraps, Cyborg was forced to cut a tremendous amount of weight, to the point that cameras caught the Invicta champ crying while attempting to cut weight. In addition, leading up to her last fight, Cyborg was forced to cut 10 pounds in just 24 hours in order to make 140 pounds.

Cris Cyborg prepared to walk away from the UFC

Scott Hernandez - December 2, 2016

Reigning & defending Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has been campaigning for the UFC to create a women’s featherweight division for quite some time now. Cyborg made her UFC debut earlier this year at UFC 198 when she stepped into the Octagon against gritty MMA veteran Leslie Smith. Despite enduring a brutal weight cut, during which footage emerged of Cyborg crying while attempting to make weight, the Invicta FC champ won the fight via 1st round TKO, putting on a rather impressive display in her UFC debut. It would be four months until Cyborg returned to the Octagon, where she faced Swedish striking ace Lina Lansberg in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: Sao Paulo’. Again, despite a brutal weight-cut, Cyborg won the fight via 2nd round TKO in impressive fashion, dominating the fight from bell to bell.

Cris Cyborg confident Miesha Tate will not retire

Back at UFC 205, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate suffered a unanimous decision loss to Raquel Pennington on the main card of the historic event. For Tate, the loss made it two in a row following her UFC 200 loss to Amanda Nunes, where she lost the women’s bantamweight championship in the very first round after being rocked and then submitted with a rear naked choke. Following the loss against Pennington at UFC 205, Tate was quick to announce her retirement from the sport during her post-fight Octagon interview, saying:

Cris Cyborg only returning to 140 for superfight

Scott Hernandez - November 22, 2016

It’s no secret that Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg is a natural featherweight fighter. With that being said, both of Cyborg’s UFC fights have been at a catchweight of 140 pounds due to the fact that she is unable to make the bantamweight limit of 135 pounds. Despite the fights taking place at 140 pounds, fight week footage of Cyborg attempting to make the brutal weight cut has revealed that just because the fight takes place at 140 pounds, doesn’t mean it’s an easy cut for the WMMA legend. In both instances, details have emerged of Cyborg cutting dangerous amounts of weight, including 10 pounds in 24 hours, as well as disturbing footage of the Invicta champ crying while attempting to cut weight.

Miesha Tate doesn't think UFC needs women's featherweight division yet

Scott Hernandez - November 5, 2016

While Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg is 2-0 inside the Octagon, she is still primarily an Invicta FC fighter due to the fact that the UFC doesn’t have a women’s featherweight division. In her two Octagon appearances, Cyborg fought at a catchweight of 140 pounds, both times enduring horrific weight-cuts, and both times delivering spectacular TKO wins. In her UFC debut, Cyborg finished Leslie Smith via first round TKO at UFC 198 earlier this year. In her second Octagon appearance, Cyborg faced off against Swedish striker Lina Lansberg, cutting nearly 10 pounds in 24 hours to make the contracted limit of 140 pounds. Despite that, Cyborg picked up yet another spectacular TKO win as she finished Lansberg and moved to 2-0 inside the Octagon.

Cris Cyborg reacts to Ronda Rousey retirement talk

Scott Hernandez - November 1, 2016

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has continued to prove herself in the UFC, as she has gone 2-0, putting on spectacular performances as she has finished both Leslie Smith, and most recently Swedish striking ace Lina Lansberg. Although she is now 2-0 inside the Octagon, both fights have been at a catchweight of 140 pounds due to the fact that the UFC doesn’t have a women’s 145 pounds division. With that being said, Cyborg has continued to call for the UFC to create a women’s featherweight division, however UFC President Dana White has remained adamant that there simply aren’t enough female fighters competing at 145 pounds, where Cyborg reigns in Invicta FC, to warrant creating an entire division in the UFC around her. Despite White’s comments, Cyborg has continued to campaign for the UFC to create a women’s featherweight division.

Cris Cyborg takes aim at Dana White: He can manipulate everybody

Scott Hernandez - October 26, 2016

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg is widely believed to be one of the best, if not the best, women’s MMA fighters of all time. With an 11 year professional MMA career, Cyborg has lost just once, her first professional fight, and has gone on to rattle off 17 straight wins over the course of the past 11 years. Despite that, it wasn’t until mid-2016 that the Invicta champ made her UFC debut. When she stepped into the Octagon at UFC 198 back in May, it took Cyborg just over a minute to TKO Leslie Smith, cementing her place as one of the best WMMA fighters on the planet. While she called for the UFC to form a women’s featherweight division, UFC President Dana White remained adamant that there aren’t enough female fighters competing at 145 pounds to warrant the UFC making a division. With that being said, Cyborg stepped into the Octagon once again at ‘UFC Fight Night: Brasilia’ where she squared off against Swedish striking phenom Lina Lansberg. Despite a brutal weight-cut that saw the Invicta champ cut nearly 10 pounds in 24 hours, Cyborg won the fight via 2nd round TKO.
