Following McGregor’s UFC 205 scrap with Eddie Alvarez, which saw McGregor score a flawless 2nd round TKO win to claim the lightweight championship, talks of McGregor having a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather began to heat up once again.

Following Conor McGregor’s historic UFC 205 win over Eddie Alvarez this past weekend that saw McGregor pick up a 2nd round TKO win to claim the lightweight championship, and become the first ever two-division UFC champion, boxing icon Floyd Mayweather heard that people were comparing McGregor to him. This past weekend, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor stepped into the Octagon to square off against UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in a highly anticipated matchup, headlining the UFC’s historic inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden. McGregor of course cemented his place in the UFC history books as he dominated Alvarez from bell to bell, dropping the gritty MMA veteran just moments into the fight, before ultimately finishing him in the 2nd round with a beautiful 4-punch combination. Following the fight, McGregor was compared to undefeated boxing icon Floyd Mayweather, which didn’t go over too well with ‘Money’, McGregor fired back, and threw fuel on the flames of a rumor of a fight between the two.

When Conor McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205, he became the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two divisions simultaneously. Though it’s known that McGregor plans to follow this momentous accomplishment with a hiatus from competition, it didn’t take long for fans to start debating who he should take on next. When it comes to McGregor’s next opponent, there seems to be five options. They are, in no particular order: interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo, top lightweight contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, and Stockton, California’s Nate Diaz.

Throughout the course of the week leading up to UFC 205, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley were involved in several backstage ‘altercations’. While no punches were exchanged, the pair were forced to be separated by security on several occasions. The first incident was a very minor one, and occurred during the UFC 205 press conference on Thursday, setting the stage for several more interactions throughout the remainder of fight week. During the course of the press conference, after McGregor took then-lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez’ title belt, he stated that he was coming for all the belts on the stage, which included Woodley’s welterweight championship.

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis experienced a bit of a career resurgence earlier this year when he dropped down to featherweight in the midst of a 3-fight losing streak at 155, which saw him lose the UFC lightweight championship to Rafael dos Anjos before dropping back to back losses. When Pettis dropped down to featherweight several months ago, he put on an impressive performance as he submitted JiuJitsu ace Charles Oliveira via 3rd round guillotine choke to earn earn himself the #6 ranking on the UFC’s official lightweight rankings. On the heels of his win over Oliveira, Pettis signed to fight featherweight #1 contender Max Holloway on December 10th at UFC 206. With that being said, ‘Showtime’ already has plans to take both of Conor McGregor’s title belts.

Conor McGregor has grown famous for his ‘Mystic Mac’ predictions before fights. Ahead of his UFC 205 scrap with Eddie Alvarez this past weekend that saw McGregor pick up a 2nd round TKO win and claim the lightweight championship, McGregor predicted that he would finish Alvarez in the first round. Interestingly enough, not only did Mystic Mac predict that he would finish Alvarez despite the fact that only one man has been able to finish Alvarez throughout the course of his nearly 15 year professional MMA career, he actually predicted that he would win two belts in the UFC, and have shares in the UFC.

On Saturday night, the UFC touched down in glimmering New York City for the very first time. They did so with UFC 205, a stacked card headlined by a lightweight title fight between divisional king Eddie Alvarez and featherweight champ Conor McGregor. The bout marked McGregor’s opportunity to become the first fighter in UFC history to wear two UFC titles simultaneously, and in the end, he accomplished this feat with apparent effortlessness. After dropping his foe three times in the first round, he polished him off with a lightning-quick, four-punch combo in the second. Alvarez hit the deck, and McGregor had earned his place in the history books. UFC 205 also reset the record for the highest selling pay-per-view in UFC history – surpassing UFC 202, another McGregor helmed card, to do so. The card also set the live gate record for Madison Square Garden, which is an incredible feat considering the massive boxing matches, concerts, hockey games and basketball games that have occurred inside the hallowed venue. Like the PPV sale record that UFC 205 set, this accomplishment can be attributed to the incredible drawing power of McGregor.
