Irish publication suggests Conor McGregor is in talks to appear on Game of Thrones

By Tom Taylor - December 5, 2016

Earlier this month, in the main event of UFC 205, Ireland’s Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. Given that he still owned the organization’s featherweight title at the time of this win, this made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously.

With this history making win in the books, McGregor has opted to take some time away from the sport to start a family with long-time girlfriend Dee Devlin. According to a report from the Irish publication The Sunday Life, however, the 28-year-old is staying plenty busy during his hiatus from fighting.

The publication reports that McGregor is being considered for a role on one of the remaining two seasons of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, which is based on a series of fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin.

The publication’s “source” – who remains veiled in mystery – claims:

“It’s been agreed that McGregor will appear in one of the remaining two seasons of Game of Thrones.”

“He was headhunted as it were by HBO, as one of the Game of Thrones directors is a huge UFC fan. They believed that he would be a perfect fit for the show.”

If McGregor does indeed take a trip to the fantasy realm of Westeros, it will not be his first acting experience.

Earlier this year, The Irishman donned a motion capture suit for a role in the latest Call of Duty release. He was also expected to star in the upcoming Vin Diesel film xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, but he ultimately opted out to focus on training, and was replaced by UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping.

McGregor has also had previous brushes with the Game of Thrones world, as he famously sparred with Hafpor Julius Bjornsson, who played The Mountain on the show.

Until these rumors are confirmed by a major and reputable publication, they should probably be taken with a grain of salt. This is, however, an exciting bit of news for McGregor and Game of Thrones fans alike. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge!
