Colby Covington sues Jorge Masvidal in civil court, ‘loss of enjoyment’ stemming from 2022 altercation

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington will reignite his feud with former teammate Jorge Masvidal after filing a civil lawsuit.
Four years after their showdown at UFC 272, former teammates-turned-enemies Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal’s feud is back in the public eye.
Covington defeated Masvidal by unanimous decision in the UFC 272 main event in Las Vegas. It was a dominant performance by Covington, who clashed with Masvidal after a significant falling-out that led to Covington leaving American Top Team-Florida amid a messy divorce.
After Covington and Masvidal exchanged personal shots before and after UFC 272, their second fight took place outside of the Octagon. Just weeks after UFC 272, Masvidal confronted Covington outside of a Miami-area restaurant, leading to Covington suffering serious injuries.
Masvidal pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge in Miami-Dade County court and was ordered to pay a fee. Despite being years removed from the incident, Covington is taking Masvidal back to court in a civil setting after suffering from multiple long-term effects.

Covington and his legal team filed a lawsuit seeking over $100,000 in damages in Miami-Dade County court on March 23rd, citing ‘bodily injury resulting in pain and suffering, disfigurement, mental anguish, loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life, and the loss of the ability to earn money’. Covington is also requesting a jury trial to rule on the matter.
The civil lawsuit comes as Masvidal and Covington both wait for potential return dates in the UFC Octagon. Covington hasn’t fought since a TKO loss to Joaquin Buckley in December 2024, while Masvidal retired following a loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287.
As of this writing, Covington and Masvidal haven’t provided public comment on their latest legal battle. This is a developing story, and we’ll continue to update you as details become available.
