VIDEO | Cody Garbrandt gets mural in Sacramento after bantamweight title win

By Tom Taylor - January 1, 2017

Last Friday night, in the co-main event of UFC 207, 25-year-old bantamweight striker Cody Garbrandt put forth a masterful performance, out-duelling a pound-for-pound stalwart in Dominick Cruz to win the UFC bantamweight title.

In the wake of this sizeable upset win, Garbrandt has received props from many of the game’s top fighters and figures. He’s also now been immortalized with a mural in Sacramento, California, where he trains under the tutelage of the recently retired Urijah Faber at Team Alpha Male. See this mural being painted in the video at the top of this post!

With his defeat of Cruz, Garbrandt becomes just the fourth champion in UFC bantamweight history, joining the company of Cruz, Renan Barao, and TJ Dillashaw. In victory, he maintains his perfect record and now stands at 11-0 overall.

As the new UFC bantamweight champion, Garbrandt’s next challenge is likely to be provided by TJ Dillashaw, who has rebounded from his January title loss to Cruz with defeats of Raphael Assuncao and John Lineker. The two bantamweights, who used to train together at Team Alpha Male, should meet sometime in 2017 – though it’s also possible the next shot goes to somebody else.

In defeat, Cruz tastes defeat for the first time since a 2007 submission loss to Urijah Faber, which he avenged with wins in his next two bouts with “The California Kid.” The former champion is now 22-2 overall.
