Over the course of this week, there has been much speculation as to whether or not UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt would be able to make his first title defense at UFC 213 on July 8th. While Garbrandt was slated to fight TJ Dillashaw on the highly anticipated card, news surfaced earlier this week that Garbrandt was being flown to see UFC President Dana White’s doctor in Germany about a back injury that could potentially keep him off UFC 213. While Garbrandt and the MMA community were skeptical that the treatment would leave Garbrandt in a position to recover and fight so soon, UFC President Dana White held out hope.

On July 8th, UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is set to step into the Octagon to defend his title against former teammate, and former UFC bantamweight champion, TJ Dillashaw at UFC 213. Unfortunately, ahead of the fight, Garbrandt has revealed that his back is injured. The champ was sent to UFC President Dana White’s doctor in Germany who cured White’s Meneires Disease. While White is extremely confident that Garbrandt will come home from Germany healthy enough to fight, a backup plan is in place. Should ‘No Love’ be unable to defend his title, TJ Dillashaw will likely drop down to flyweight and challenge Demetrious Johnson for the UFC flyweight title, where Johnson will look to set the record for most UFC title defenses.

The UFC recently revealed that bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt would be defending his UFC bantamweight title this summer against TJ Dillashaw in a highly anticipated grudge match following ‘TUF Redemption’. Unfortunately, this week, it was revealed that Dillashaw’s plane ticket to the UFC Summer Kickoff event was cancelled, since Garbrandt was flying to Germany to receive treatment for a tear in his back. TJ Dillashaw was quick to take to social media to taunt Garbrandt for potentially pulling out of the fight. Which of course brought more attention to the situation.

The two former teammates are slated to settle their differences in the Octagon at UFC 213 following their stints as coaches on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter. However, both fighters took to social media on Friday to reveal some information that could potentially push the fight back to a later date.

The bantamweight king is now engaged to his long time girlfriend, Danny Pimsanguan. Pimsanguan announced her engagement to Garbrandt on her Instagram account. Garbrandt then shared this post on his own Instagram account, calling her “the future Mrs. Garbrandt.”

In May of 2014, he scored a decision win over Chico Camus, moving to 2-0 in the Octagon and 6-0 overall, and establishing himself as one of the brightest young prospects in the UFC bantamweight division. He has not been seen in the cage since.

Johnson is currently set to fight Wilson Reis in a highly anticipated showdown this weekend, where he will move one step closer to breaking Silva’s record. With a win, Johnson will tie Silva’s record, however the flyweight champion has long stated that his goal is to break Silva’s record. UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt revealed in a recent interview that if Johnson emerged successful against Reis, he would drop to flyweight to force Johnson to earn the record.

When Daniel Cormier choked out Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the main event of UFC 210, it opened the door for a massive Cormier vs. Jon Jones light heavyweight grudge match sometime later this year. Given that UFC 213, which will cap off this year’s International Fight Week, is still without a main event, and that it occurs right as Jones’ PED-related suspension ends, it looks like the perfect setting for this massive light heavyweight title fight. At the UFC 210 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White was asked about the possibility of this grudge match headlining UFC 213, which is scheduled for July 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada. While the boss was noncommittal in his answer, he did confirm that the UFC 213 lineup will include a bantamweight title fight between champ Cody Garbrandt and estranged former teammate TJ Dillashaw.

Last December, in the co-main event of UFC 207, Team Alpha Male’s Cody Garbrandt swiped the bantamweight belt from the waist of Dominick Cruz with a dominant, unanimous decision win. Though he briefly offered Cruz a rematch, Garbrandt’s first title defense will instead pair him against former training partner and one-time bantamweight king TJ Dillashaw. The two are likely to meet sometime this summer – perhaps during International Fight Week in July.
